Volume shadow copy necessary?

Even Bill2 one of the true Windows gurus around here has said that VSS must be on, at least Manual for the successful creation of 3rd party images.

The status is ok. It just isn't needed at the moment. It will start when called on.

Just coming back to the point someone raised about the difference between system restore and system image.

The objective of system restore is to restore windows system files, the registry and programs. It restores everything inside the windows folder and a set of monitored extensions outside that. So it can (and likely will) mess with user created exes/batches/scripts, this is the source of complaints about system restore having deleted files.

System image OTOH restores EVERYTHING (of course excluding what it never backed up in the first place- hibernation file, pagefile and shadow copies).

It's partly for the reason above and the fact that system restore, for me at least, can produce bad results that I don't use it.

I've relied on system images. I just keep them to a manageable size <60GB.

As I understand it, a system image includes also personal files like mp3s and images, and the volume shadow copy doesnt?

If I go this way: Control panel -> system and security -> backup and restore, I can back up personal files like mp3s and images. I can plan f.ex to take backup once a week.

What if the volume shadow copy is deactivated in "services", will backing up personal files still work?

There are 2 types of backup in "Windows Backup & Restore" and they are very different.
(1) File/folder backup makes .zip files and backups up personal data - mp3s documents .....
(2) Images are a COMPLETE snapshot of your partition. Operating system, programs, data .....the lot.

Im not going to deactivate it, but anyway backing up files/folders doesnt depends on that volume shadow copy is ativated?

This question implies you are considering turning the service off. My response is don't.
If your question is academic, you can try turning the service off and see what happens to your backup capability.

I wonder if I should use volume shadow copy on my PC. Is it necessary? Is it typical that it creates many problems?

If you use Macrium and presumably many other imaging programs the service is required to be enabled else the imaging will not work, unless I'm mistaken.

Acronis doesn't need or require this feature -- I always think why is it that things like Backups which EVERYBODY should do are made complicated by MS -- why should people be concerned with "Shadow Volumes" etc -- in fact I'd wager that even on THIS forum probably over 50% of the people do not know what this service is and what it does.

Other backup programs might also work fine without this too -- I use ACRONIS and can certainly say I've never found the VSS or whatever to be a requirement for sucessfull partition imaging.

Now if you are using DYNAMIC disks or some types of RAID this could be another issue - but even here you can always image WHOLE DISKS too.

Apart from backup services I've seen obscure reference to "other services". Maybe someone knows what the "other" services are.
I don't rely on restore points but Windows updates uses them. Would updates be impacted?

Pragmatically, if it's just left in manual it shouldn't get in the way and if it's ever needed by some "other" service it's there.
