VPN sharing

Hey there

So I want to access the files on my home computer from my laptop over the internet. On the home computer, I set the whole e:/ drive to be shared. I can access it just fine when i'm connected with my laptop to my own home network. So now i'm at my buddy's place. I set up my home computer to accept VPN connections. I connected successfully to my home computer with the VPN, but the computer does not show up in my network. What am I missing here?

Is the Network Discovery turned on for all machines (assuming they're all W7s)?

both machines are running windows 7 and network discovery is turned on. It works on the same physical lan, but not a vpn. Is there maybe a port I need to forward other than 1723 for the vpn? I must be just missing something... hmm...
