Solved W7 32bit external backup?

I doubt that this will work. There is not enough power in the USB2 port to drive the spinning disk. It would work with an SSD or if you used a USB3 port.

USB port supply 5VDC and a hard drive requires 12 VDC to spin the disc and operate the arm.
You can use something like this. It uses USB for data transfer with it's own power supplied adapter from wall socket.

The OP says 2 mains powered external drives, so shouldn't that work using USB for the data transfer?.

Yes, for a hard drive uses the usb port for data transfer, which is 5VDC.
I'm not sure what main powered external drives to the OP means.
If he/she is referring to a source of 12VDC to power the drive and then plugging into the usb port for data transfer things should work.
The point is simple.
A hard drive needs a 12VDC input not just the 5VDC got from the usb port.
You can't transfer data to a hard drive that can't spin the disc and move the arm.
12VDC is needed for that.

Addressing the external HD?
I am quite happy about the 220V AC mains being able to power the external's hard disk using a power supply.
The Toshiba Canvio 2TB looks a possibility.
However I read somewhere that W7 32bit can only address so much disk space (forgive my non-techie language). Maybe someone could clarify this for me,
