I will be upgrading my x64 laptop to W7 when I receive my CD from MS next month.

I currently use Avira and my license expires Nov 09. On the Avira website they advise you
that it is not compatable with W7, however, I have read several posts that it will indeed
function with W7.

I am debating a change to Norton 2010 or AVG. My experience with Norton was not very
favorable, load time, so I am leaning towards AVG.

I would request from the group your opinion of what would be the most efficient security system to install for W7.

Thanks

My experience with norton also has not been very good but I decided to try it again, and guess what it still has problems. If I were limited to either Norton or AVG I would pick AVG.

Hello enigma and welcome to the forums...

There is no definitive answer to your question, as everyone has his or her own idea/preferences on system security, based on their own requirements. I have a very basic setup, so my needs are not as demanding as someone who is running several servers, hosting their own site, etc.

Personally, my security consists of ESET 4.0, daily incremental backups to a seperate drive, weekly disc imaging to a seperate drive. Im sure you will get a lot of answers, and hopefully you will be able to set up a security policy that fits your needs

One of the things people need to realize that a faster load time may not always be the best thing - I can write an AV program that will load faster than any other - b/c it won't detect squat.

Make use of resources like Virus Bulletin and figure out which has both the best detection 8and* the best load time - and, while you're at it, you should *really* look at M$ Security Essentials.

Yep, ESET 4.0 is the best.
Low on resources (I dont even know its running except for the little icon.
VERY good detection rate.
Very fast scanning.
ESET has it all! Best of both worlds ftw! And also, cheap. $40 a year last time I checked!

Vipre seems even lighter and the scans are even faster. Detected things that ESET missed and works great in Windows 7.

And even cheaper...$29.95 a year... ;)

I've gone back to NOD32 after running Vipre for a few days. Vipre screwed up one of my files and I fear the only way to fix the problem program is a reinstall of windows. The program won't run after Vipre falsely detected it as malware. Never had this problem with NOD. I should have known better than to try it. NOD32 has served me well for over 8 years now and after my bad experience with Vipre I don't think I'll ever run another AV again.

I'm currently running with Avast! (& Comodo FW) and hoping to stay with these for when I go to Win7 64 bit. I have found them really excellent products and read that they should be OK for Win7.

Both work good yo But really just use Windows Firewall and Avira thats a better combination...
Avast is a little heavy (Its web shield eats up 60MB of RAM)

Yep =)

Reason why I use ESET's firewal lis because
1. I DONT use the homegroup feature
2. It does a VERY good job stopping:
Codered worm
sqlslammer
RPC/DCOM attacks
Sasser worm
All types of Conflicker, and future types.
ARP poisoning
DNS poisoning
TCP and UDP Port scanning attacks
SMB relay attacks
ICMP protocol attacks
Convert data in ICMP protocol attacks
TCP protocol overload attacks
And blocks unsafe address after attack's

VERY good features in ESET =)
Dident even know thoes were there until my cousin had a DNS poisoning (he had COMODO) and I found that in ESET Firewall =P
