W7 invalid Key, Can I purchase an upgrade W8?

I did a clean install of windows 7 when I wasn't connected. Now that I am connected I find out my product key has been used to many times (not on one of my PC's). Would I be able to purchase an upgrade of windows 8 and install that, even if my current Windows 7 is not activated?

I may be corrected, but I would say the system to be upgraded has to be valid I'm sure.
It sounds like you may have an OEM or system Builder key. You should be able to use Other Activation and call MS to activate the w7 install, which would be the better way IMO.

I know they could activate it for $99, I was just hoping to avoid paying that much for an old product.
