Solved W7/Linux Mint dual boot upgade

Is it per chance a USB keyboard? do you have a PS/2 one lying around you can test on?

Yes it is a USB keyboard. I have another USB keyboard plus a keysonic mini wirelees keyboard which works via a USB dongle but sadly no PS/2 keyboard.
Do you think I've got it in the right port? J

Now connect the other 1TB HDD to make sure the Windows 7 HDD stays as Disk 0 in disk management.

Ok. Shall I just put in the 0 port and then the 500gb in port 2?

Ok. This is a new pic of disk management. As you can see the other 1TB drive has taken disk 0 and the Windows disk is disk 1 whilst the 500GB is disk 2.
Does this mean I need to swap Disk 0 and disk 1?
As I said it's not clear from the manual whether the inner or outer port is 1 or 2.
Also I've plugged in another USB keyboard to the same USB port on the pc and it's behaving just the same with regard to pressing enter on the boot. Should I try another USB port perhaps?

Well sh.., that board has a SATA 0 port?


The Windows 7 HDD needs to be in the port 0 and the Linux HDD needs to be in port 1 then but be sure to power down the PC first.


Yes I see the new snip, swap the (power down first) the 2 1TB data cables to see if Windows 7 says Disk 0.

It wouldn't boot Ted so I've had to change it back. I looked in the BIOS and it seems ch1 hass priority over ch0

You have to put it back (the W7 HDD) to port 0 and set the main BIOS to boot from the port 0 first, not just the F12 one-time menu, set the main BIOS to boot the Windows 7 HDD first.


All this is really worth the trouble as it will sort this same issue you have been having for a while now, right?

Also I'm not sure that disk 0 has a bootable OS on it anymore. All the partitions are NTFS now except that 81GB of free space. Maybe Linux Mint was on the 40+ that I formatted as NTFS last night.
Unless it is in the free space. Is that likely?

Let's just concentrate on getting Windows 7 to show as Disk 0 in disk management, and booting while the other 1TB HDD shows as Disk 1 then we will work on other things, ok.

Ok. I think that worked. I took out both 1TB Ssatas and put the Windows disk in port 0 and tried to boot. I entered the BIOS and port 0 was already showing as top of the list. I then shut down again and inserted the other sata-the 1TB with all the partitions on it.

I have a Ubuntu 11.04 ISO disk. The Liux Mint 11 is only a release candidate. Mind you, whatever I do I need to find a way to make the machine boot from disk.

That 'new' partition at the front of Disk 1, did you put anything there as it was unallocated space yesterday, if not delete it as it was using disk management before you try the Linux boot.

OK, using the F12 hot-key at PC startup (the one-time boot menu) see if the Linux HDD will boot, unfortunately I'm not much help with Linux OS / Grub and that stuff.

Well I never put anything on it but I just checked and it's showing as active, primary. It shows an NST folder (8KB) and one marked ANG0 in white which is 231 KB when I open it

It needs to not be Active, that's why I said if you put nothing there to delete it, I don't know but it may be interfering with Linux booting.
