Ok I got an Emachine et1831-05 running W7 64bit - I have put in a Nivdia gts250 1gb card - it is processing graphics fine but with my 22in monitor westinghouse (best buy deal) it is being called an ACER by windows?

it is not able to go above 1280x1024 - the monitor is able to go higher the card is able to go higher but it is like W7 wont recognize it -

Tired - downloading new drivers but when I when to install is said will not work with OS - looked in Nvida website says it will???

Tired disabling monitor driver - no difference??
it seemed to work when I first installed card until it wanted to rebot then right back to where it started---

HELP pleaseeee...

Hello par.

Right click an open area of the desktop then go down the list to Nvidia Control Panel. Left click it. Just in case Click the pic and it gets bigger.;)
This takes you to Nvidia Change Resolution page. See pic below.
1)Select monitor- your new one should be outlined all ready.
2) Select PC resolution. As you see mine is 1440x900 at 75MHz.
Almost all monitors use setting at 60MHz so yours should be 60 MAYBE 75MHz.
If your resolution is in this list you are done. Close page.
Only go to Step 3 if yours isn't listed at Step 2.
Custom Resolutions as the ones I have shown are totally unstable with MY monitor. So don't go further unless necessary.
3) If your Resolution isn't listed click "Customize"
4) Select a PC res that may work. You can always change or try others.
5) Click OKAY to accept and try.

HI Hopalong

Well I tried the custom setting- it will list it but will not allow it to run -- It almost seems like the on board video processor is overriding the new card but I can not turn off the on board VD??? Any other ideas..... I think it is something to do with the Emachine set up but I dont know what???

There should be a place to choose which GPU to use- onboard or PCI.

I just have PCI so I don't know where to tell you to look for it.

It might even be a setting in the Bios????

I think you will be okay with it if someone would post where you select this option between video source.

I'll post for some assistance. Maybe that will catch some help.

Hi hoppy and par2972 , In the bios setting look for "onboard Video" and make sure its set to "disabled " or you may have to set it "use PCI-e " :)

Try Pebbly's suggestion first and look in Bios.
If not then try mine.
Much easier in Bios if it is listed there.

What I find per Google is you go to Device manager and Disable the onboard graphics. DO NOT DELETE

Here is a seven forums tutorial. They say go into safe mode which is what I found in other tutorials.
Yours could even be F8. The the tutorial shows other possibilities. I'm not sure what yours will use.

Seven tutorial says delete the driver I would just disable as all other tutorial say Disable.
Then when you reboot the new card will be recognized.

Here is 7forums. You will see where Disable and Delete buttons are.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/80392-graphics-card-install-new-card.html?filter[2]=Hardware and Drivers

One from a Google search. I looked at several this seems best laid out to read.

Post back. I'll be around all day.

I will try these things and get back to you. But in the mean time here is more info on what is going on:

I updated the emachine onboard nvidia card without the new card in. Put the new card back in and it adjusted perfectly to 1600x1200. System automatically installed some driver. It automatically restarted computer and reverted the resolution back to 1200x1024. Now it won't allow me to adjust the settings again. Also whenever trying to shut down or restart the comnputer there are 6 unknown w7 updates that repeatedly try to install but never does. Maybe there is a correlation??

You have to select the PCI card. OR disable onboard graphics so it will not jump back to default on board.

Try getting the manual and see if it shows or look in Bios as Pebbly posted.

The other is to diasable on board as I posted if Pebbly's does not work.

On board has to be disabled it is the default graphics. Your PCI card works and then goes to default on board.

Try disabling the onboard through Device Manager- or see if it shows disabled there. If not disabled in Dev. Manager click Disable and reboot.

I know it shows in Bios disabled but make sure Windows knows it.

I think Hopalong is onto it : shows us your Device Manager, and lets see which cards are recognised. I run a GTS250 aswell and can get to 1920x1080 on a 21" SyncMaster, so yours should be capable of that.

Done everything everyone has suggested including through Device Manager and it is still not working. It will work correctly at 1600x1200 like it should until the card installs and then after it automatically reboots it goes back to the wrong resolution settings.
