I work as an IT for a small business. And I believe that Microsoft once again has removed one more of their products that was sold to us. I keep getting tech support calls about weather widget not working on Windows 7 desktops installed in our offices. I need to replace this:

608525

with something that actually shows a weather forecast and runs on a Windows 7 desktop.

Any ideas?

I swear, there must be a smart guy per every forum these days.

I'm asking someone's opinion on a good weather app and not how to use Google.

I wasn`t being smart, I did not realize you wanted me to find one for you, give me a second.

There`s one that looks just like the native weather app, that`s why I suggested google, you don`t have to be rude.

I recommend Weather Kelvin

I use Yo Window - it's very user-friendly and customizable.

YoWindow - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Make sure to click "custom" and uncheck any garbage it wants to add.

There are several weather gadgets available in 8GadgetPack - Gadgets for Windows 8 / 8.1 which latest version supports Windows 7.

There are reports the past few days that this is not working in Windows 7 now, after it's worked for some months with their latest version.

A fix for the existing sidebar gadget has been found!

Go to the Start Menu search box or open the Run dialog, then paste

Code:
%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Services\Cache

and press Enter.

You should see a Config.xml file.

Replace this Config.xml file with the one located at http://thefilmreel.tk/Config.xml
(right click, save link as or save target as)

Restart your machine.

The weather gadget and the currency gadget should now run properly!

This is working for standard Weather gadget so far on several PC's here.

Thanks!

I've successfully set up addgadgets.com and it's better than what I had before.

8gadgetpack did not load under Win7 on several tries.

Rainmeter appeared to be all about graphics. Was unable to find any weather gadgets and now don't need to try any further....

Thanks for all the help.

Never one to blindly assert a strange file onto my computer, I looked at the two and VERY ODDLY the new Config file uses different characters for "carriage returns". The original consistently uses ASCII 0D 0A and the new one instead uses just 0A. I can't imagine why/how after all these years this would happen???

:p

That could possibly pose a problem, but not specifically a malevolent one, see the last paragraph.

From: Line termination: line feed versus carriage return 0d 0a
If your file was created in Linux, you would also see a single character 0a after each letter, that is, wherever you pressed the ENTER key.

If your file was created in Windows, the pair of characters 0d and 0a would appear any place where you pressed the ENTER key.

The hexadecimal 0a, a control character as opposed to a printing character, is called a line feed.

The hexadecimal 0d is called a carriage return.

Pretty much all the programs on the Windows platform understand and expect the hexadecimal 0a0d pair in text. The 0d0a pair of characters is the signal for the end of a line and beginning of another.

On the other hand, a UNIX program expects the single 0a character to denote the same thing.

A problem arises with cross-platform exchange of files. If you transfer files from Linux to Windows or Mac, the software sees something other than what it expects.
According to this the new Config file was created using linux or someone used to using linux. I could only speculate on the why or how after all these years.

My best shot; bk4him would have to ask the owner of thefilmreel.tk site why s/he created the new config in linux.

What is bizarre to me is that there isn't anything else that is different about the contents of the file; nothing else to suggest why the gadget starts to work again.

Hi folks, just to clear up the confusion, here's the manual process for repairing your Config.xml. I just compiled one myself to save you all the hassle.

Open "%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Services\Cache\Config.xml" in Notepad or other plain text editor.

Change the values in these lines at the top of the file:
<services refresh="60"> -- change from 60 to 45
<service name="weather">
<operation interval="30"/> -- change from 30 to 15

and also the values in these lines at the bottom:
<service name="stocks">
<operation interval="15"/> -- change from 15 to 10
</service>
<service name="currency">
<operation interval="30"/> -- change from 30 to 15

Upon restarting your machine or sidebar.exe, all gadgets should function properly.
