Solved Website not loading in Windows 7 home computer...

I've got a bit of a poser I thought I would throw out there for you Windows 7 intelligentsia.

I recently migrated my website to a new webhost. After waiting for the DNS re-propagation period to run its course, I soon discovered that although I could load the website without issue at my workplace (Macintosh) I was unable to bring it up on my computer at home. After a bit of back and forth with the techs at the webhost, it eventually became obvious that the problem must be on my end somewhere.

I am using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I have flushed the DNS cache several times, cleared cache and cookies in several different browsers, rebooted modem and computer several times but still my website refuses to load. When I run the ping command and traceroute command the request times out immediately on the ping command and eventually does so on the traceroute command. One thing odd I have noticed is that when I ping the website from home it is pinging the wrong IP address (I am using the domain name when I run the command) whereas it pings the correct IP from work.

Strangely enough when I launch Win 7's Virtual XP mode and open a browser in it and type in my website it opens with no problem! To say the least I am stumped and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what is going on and what I need to do to get the website to open on the Win 7 side.

One thing I should add is that prior to the move I changed from a dedicated IP to a shared one. I don't know if this is playing a part in what I'm seeing or not. It still doesn't explain why it loads in my virtual XP mode though.

Any thoughts?

Have you thought about creating a new user account profile and testing it then?

Also, what is the website? I notice you didn't list it in your original post.

The website is superlather.com.

No I've not given any thought to creating a new user account. Particularly since it loads in my XP mode. I suppose I could try it though just to see.

Have you tried a different DNS server? Typically ISP DNS servers are normally the last to pick up new records.

Also have you edited the HOSTS file at all? If so please remove any entries in it as this will override any DNS requests

I forgot to mention the hosts file! No I haven't altered that although it was one of the things I checked early on.

I could try a different DNS server but there is still that niggling problem of it loading in the Win 7's XP mode which is using the servers I've always used.

True, that is something I have been thinking of. If you are confident that your DNS servers are not the issue then temporarily disable any firewall or A/V applications you have and temporarily test the connection.

If that yields no results then boot your machine into Safe Mode with Networking to find help find the troublesome process however the only possible application that would be specific on one website I can think of is a firewall program.

I will try some of these suggestions when I get home in the hopes of solving the mystery.

Any ideas as to how the virtual XP mode is able to overleap all of these hurdles and go its merry way?

Xp mode uses a virtual network adapter with its own (Default) settings. Its completely separated from the OS windows 7.
This is why xp mode worked, and your machine won't. You will probably see it under network adapter settings. Virtual adapter.
One thing I should add is that prior to the move I changed from a dedicated IP to a shared one. I don't know if this is playing a part in what I'm seeing or not. It still doesn't explain why it loads in my virtual XP mode though.

This is probably what it is. Something is not calling out correctly.
It's defiantly something up with your settings somewhere.
I would suggest the host file, but this has already been talked about. Have you tried uninstalling your network adapter and reinstalling it? Reverting to default connection settings?
IS it just your website that will not load? Hardware firewall? Software firewall somehow blocking it?

Well that's good to know about the XP mode.

No I haven't tried reinstalling my network adapter. As far as I know it is just my website. I haven't altered any firewall settings and prior to the move everything loaded correctly.

Could you post a screenshot of ipconfig /all? Recommend using the built in snipping tool in win 7.

Here are the DDS logs.

I am able to load the website from my laptop running Vista. This is definitely a Win7 Pro issue.

Edited to add the ipconfig/all log.

Well there's your problem I believe.

Your DNS server is set to 127.0.0.1 this is a loopback address for your machine therefore the machine will not have received a valid IP address.

Can you follow this tutorial on your ethernet local area connection and change your DNS servers:

I recommend the following as they are google public DNS servers :

Primary: 8.8.8.8

Secondary: 8.8.4.4

If you want you can point your DNS servers to:

192.168.0.1 - This will use your router as a DNS server allowing you to ping internal hostnames or you can choose to obtain one automatically. Either way just make sure it is NOT 127.0.0.1

Hope This Helps,
Josh :)

Yes I can try that but then why do other websites load in Win7? It seems that would prevent everything from loading.

Most likely from cache however I cannot be for sure. All I know is that unless your machine is a DNS server you are not going to resolve any IP addresses

I agree, looks like sabotage to me. ;)

Of course just leaving it blank will typically allow the router to handle it, but I always type in my preferred DNS servers into my router's settings.

Not to sound argumentative but cache and cookies were the first things I cleared in multiple browsers when all of this started so I doubt it is that.
