WET equivalent to go from Windows 7 to Windows 10?

I'm apologizing in advance for a question inviting a "google is your friend" response, but I've come up unsatisfactory to this point using google, and using sevenforums' own search function, so here goes.

I've used Windows Easy Transfer many a time to go to Windows 7 from this or that XP or Win7 computer (that is, moving data and configuration settings, so that the new computer has the essential look/feel and data of the old one).

My daughter is about to buy a new Windows 10 computer, and naturally wants her "stuff" from the old Win7 computer. But a cursory look at how this is done suggests that Win10 does not have WET.

Okay, fine, there are always newer and better ways to do things. But what's the easiest way to accomplish what I want (again, move data and configurations from a current Win7 computer to a new Win10 one, using an external HD and one good piece of software)?

My advice is, and sorry it does not answer your question, you should not be storing any data with windows, keep it on the external drive if possible.

Or at least make a partition on the new pc for data.

I recommend the simple copy and paste and verification method.

I had been eyeing that Easeus tool, and am right now in the process of transferring to an external drive from the old laptop.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txeZaTar15s shows how to do this (wish there were sound narration). It looks like I can select things to transfer, from the whole big image file - that is back up everything, but restore selectively to the new computer.

Is that the impression others get, from the video or their own experience?

I did use the Easeus tool, and it was a complete disaster.

WET - not an option here of course - was smart enough to figure out what files went where, for what user profiles or whatever, and even if changing to a new OS, would bring the old files to the new computer, organized logically so that the user experience on the new computer would be exact or similar to the one on the old computer.

Not so with the Easeus tool.

I used the free version, which allowed me to copy over two applications. I picked Office 2007 and Firefox.

Office 2007 didn't work at all; I just reinstalled it fresh.

Firefox set up as a brand new "cold" installation - the profile from the other computer wasn't brought over, or if it was, it wasn't put where it should have gone. So passwords, history, cookies, all that, aren't available.

As far as moving data, the folders and subfolders from My Documents on the old computer are gone too. Everything under My Documents just moved - files, no folder structure - into the Downloads area of the Windows 10 computer. And all the files are dated at time of transfer, vs. original file date. So sorting files by date is useless too; a file created in 2011 will sort next to one created yesterday, if that's the order they transferred in.

If someone knows how to constructively use this tool, please let me know.

Otherwise, I think I'm going to just copy the whole of the My Documents folder, and the Firefox profile, and put them manually where they should go, and be done with it.

You can`t carry over programs, they have to be reinstalled. Even if it said it would, I wouldn`t trust it.

Yeah, I know programs can't generally carry over. Confused though as to why the software offered this capability.

Tomorrow I am going to copy and paste, yes. I have looked and can't find a useful tutorial on how to do it. Suggestions? My thought is that the default Firefox profile, and the entire My Documents area, copied from old to new and put in the correct spots manually, will be sufficient, but maybe I've overlooked something.

When I mean the folders are gone, in the old laptop, under My Documents, you might have folders like Taxes, Work Stuff, Miscellaneous, each with a sub folder 2016, 2015, 2014, etc. The Easeus software simply put a stream of files onto the new computer, so that 2015 taxes will be in the same folder as a 2014 Work Stuff document and a 2016 Miscellaneous. Of course, the actual laptop has hundreds of folders and subfolders under My Documents, meaning that there's no practical way the mess of tens of thousands of unsorted files could ever be manually regrouped. Copy/pasting will of course solve this.
