What can I shut down or delete in Task Scheduler ?

Hello all

I remember that I had noting running in Task Scheduler in XP but in Win7 there seems to be a whole bunch of stuff that is there by default.

Seems like a lot of it is not needed but I wouldn't really be the best to determine so can anyone point me to a tutorial or page that discusses this?

Theoretically they all can be disabled. The only downside is it will stop certain things from being automated, like automatic updates or time synchronization or background disk defragger. Scheduled backups will also be affected. Also system restore and maybe some diagnostics.

It is not clear to me, however, what you hope to achieve by doing this. Disabling tasks will not improve performance. Win7 resource management is far more advanced than XP's, it will assign priority and other resources to a task depending on what else is running. I highly recommend researching each entry before deciding to to disable anything.

I just had a look at your specs, you have nothing to be gained by disabling tasks and as Bill2 has said it will cause OS instability if you do.

With 8 gigs of ram, there's not much tweaking to be done.

like Bill said,disabling this task won't effect much on your PC. Plus most of the task like windows defragmanter, sytem checkpoint,troubleshooter works background only when you're not using PC or when you PC is not in a high usage. After all,you yourself can modify the schedule to suits best on you preference

Yeah I just figured I would get all that I can get.

Its interesting that for everything Bill2 mentioned I either don't do that way or have something taking care of that.

For exampled, I don't want automatic MS updates as I perfer to know what is happeing with that, time sync I do want but I use O&O for constaint background defragging. An I do my own backing up.

Basically not only do I do things like this to improve performance but its been my experience that things running in the background, especially ones that start randomly from a task scheduled type thing, often times can come on just at the wrong time and who knows how that will affect some random program as not everything can be tested with everything.

So basically this can often lead to lockups or freezes that you can't do any about except to do a power off restart which typically over time is what leads to a really screwy system.

Personally for me I have been finding 7 to be doing this quite a bit already more then XP an would suspect it might be from this source.

Personally for me I want the absolute minimum being either run or scheduled to run in the back ground and it really isn't always about performance but about compatibility too.
