What do you backup

I found the file on everuything but it wouldn't let me do a thing with it. This is "undeleter"
And this is what it found. It is the Patti's Monthly expenses
[/QUOTE

We seem to not be communicating well.

I have no idea what "undeleter" is.

To repeat myself:

Everything is not a recovery tool. It won't let you do anything with any file it finds. It just locates stuff.

Did you look in the recycle bin?

Use Everything again and search for the file or folder name in question.

If Everything finds the folder, post the location shown in this thread.

If Everything does NOT find it, you have to use something like Recuva.

You say that Everything found the file. If that is true, you should be able to just go to the location shown and find your files or folder. Without using any other tool.

I am clearly not understanding what you are doing or what you have already done.

Undeleter is a restore data program.
I fan everything again - I tried to track down their location and it wasn't there, just their shortcut

I am guessing the file in question is an Excel file called Patti's Monthly Expenses.

Apparently you deleted it and then compounded the problem by then emptying your recycle bin.

You are out of luck unless a program such as Recuva can help you.

Here is a good source. There is e.g. a 500GB Seagate for $39.99 at Newegg which looks like a good deal. Seagates are as good as any - although I personally prefer the Japanese makes.
Storage Devices Deals - Deals2buy.com

When I go to Newegg, it is not for 39.99, it is 60 something. It doesn't get good reviews but I think only 3 people reviewed it.
Yeah, this particular deal seems to have expired. Keep looking. There are new ones every day.

How about this hard drive

Can I just keep using skydrive instead of getting an external hard drive. If my computer crashes or something, I wouldn't be able to access skydrive? What do you think?

I would not personally rely on Skydrive or any similar application as my only backup. I have a lot of very important stuff that I just can't entrust to a website in the sky that might go out of business or be unavailable for whatever reason.

If your personal data isn't particularly important to you, then Skydrive might suffice.

Keeping backups on an external is more foolproof and is entirely under your own control.

Here is a Western Digital 500 GB external drive for $50 at Newegg, with free shipping:

Newegg.com - Western Digital Elements 500GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDBAAU5000EBK-NESN

Newegg now has this one on sale for 3 more days - It would be $60 with free shipping. Which one should I get? I want easy!

The $60 drive has twice the capacity of the $50 drive.

One is as easy as the other.

One will hold twice as much as the other and it is up to you to decide if having twice as much capacity is worth $10.

Got the hard drive

Ok, I got the hard drive and have it plugged in. When I went to backup, it still has the red line through the I drive and says it is disconnected. I did plus my usb in the front and I have the hard drive plugged in the back. I wonder if I turned off something or why it says it is disconnected.
Also, once I get that figured out, you said to cut and paste. Where is the hard drive, other than in the control panel that I paste in?
I must seem really dumb to you, but when it comes to this kind of stuff I know nothing.

if you click start button and select computer, then it will open a window with your drives ,including the new external. clicking the external will open it and you will just see another window like any other explorer window. if you keep that window open and open your users folder then you can copy folders over to the external drive window you have open.

click the start button and your users folder is at the top of the list, not sure what name you have given your user folder .but it will be that name

right clicking a folder will open the context menu and you select copy . then in the external window right click an empty space then select paste
do this for your photos and other important data. i understand you have a lot on your desktop .the same applies ,right click the folders you want a backup copy of then select copy ,and then paste it into the external window.

no one here thinks you are dumb. they think you are a novice and probably remember their beginnings too. we're here to help patty so dont put yourself down ,in six months time you will be so much more advanced, and stick on the forum there is so much to learn, i learn something new here every day.

ok. You don't move the whole folder, you move the contents? Why can't you just copy and paste the whole folder. Also, I cannot find in the previous posts on how I find my users folder. But this does sound easy.

I just copied and pasted to the hard drive. Now is there a way to organize it so all the contents of today are under the same date? Like it would show backup dates.

You know if you had backed up on the computer and you wanted to restore it, it gives the dates that you backed up. It just lists the dates.
Backing up the way I just did, I have 5 folders with no dates. If I needed to restore, I wouldn't know which copy of
"excel" to back up? Know what I mean?

One more thing, do you keep this external hard drive plugged in all the time or just when you backup?

Ok firstly, the folders you copied are just that , copies, not backups in the sense that you restore from a back up. so if you have an issue with your computer and the folders get lost .ie tax info. then you have a copy on the external so all is not lost. presumably the folders have a name like photos, tax info etc, just use that as a reference .
and no you dont need to keep the external plugged in all the time just plug it in when you want to access it. i have three externals i use all the time i dont keep my media files on the pc they all get stored in the externals, when i play music the media player is playing the files from one of my externals. if something goes wrong with the pc,as has happened to me previously ,when i replaced the pc then all i had to do was plug in my externals and continue with no loss. well of my media .one of the externals has my documents and photos on it too. and i have a backup copy in my skydrive . so all bases covered. touch wood.

After a while though you are going to have 5 tax folders and 5 of every other folder, you won't know which one is the latest. How do I find my users folder?
I just had a thought. A couple of times I used the restore feature when my computer was acting funny after maybe installing something. So I restored it to a previous time and it worked great. When trying to find this excel file, I tried restoring from the restore point and it wouldn't. I think it gave me an error that I already put a screenshot up on this forum. Do you know how I can get that working again. I never did any backup, but there were a bunch of dates on there. Thanks

system restore doesnt affect your personal files . the dates on that are restore points ,so for instance you can restore the computer to how it was on a particular day ,but it wont affect your data folders.

not sure how you mean five folders if you mean everytime you add files to the tax folder then presumably you copy it to the external also, but if you copy the newer folder and paste it on/in the tax folder in the external then it will say that these files already exist and do you want to replace them. and you would select yes so it always has the most up to date copy in ONE folder.

im sure there must be a simpler way to create a copy and sync it so that when you add to one folder it will add to the backup copy in the external. not sure . perhaps someone else can enlighten us there.

I understand what you mean now. So you will always have the latest into.
Do you know how to get my system restore back to working again? As I said, in this thread I pasted a screenshot of the error. I would like to get that up and running also.
I just took my whole users file, selected all and pasted it. Couldn't be easier or faster.

it may well be worth creating a new thread about system restore and how to solve the issue. im now retiring for the night , its 1 Am here in the UK . :sleepy:
