What does it mean when I can work in Safe Mode but normal mode is unus

The other day I booted up my notebook in the morning and was reading the news when my browser froze, then the entire system locked up. Now it takes an absurd amount of time to boot up and once I'm in, the system once again freezes if I try to do anything. I am able to get into Safe Mode and it runs fine with no problems. So I am clueless as the what the problem is. I have tried performing a clean boot and that yielded no results. I am running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Well after performing the first step in that guide I still experienced the prolonged boot up and freezing once I was logged in.

What do you mean by saying "freezes"? No response at all? Mouse move is not possible? It freezes forever (have you waited 5 minutes or more?)
Does clock in taskbar also freeze (shows same time forever)?

After trying the diagnostic boot for the first time, it got stuck at the "Starting Windows", I waited for about 15 minutes. However now when I try it, the start up still takes too long but I am able to get in and perform various normal operations without a problem.

To clarify, I did NOT wait longer than 5 minutes but the clock did freeze as well. Like I said my browser would freeze, Chrome would report that the page was not responding. When I tried to close it, that's when Windows Explorer would then become unresponsive and then the entire system would freeze up and I would be unable to move the mouse or use the keyboard aside from the power button to shut it down.

Right now I am just thinking and hoping that if I could manage to perform a reinstall of the entire OS that would solve it. But could this also be a problem with the BIOS? To give some background info I have had to deal with the BIOS on this notebook once before where I booted it up and the BIOS had seemingly downgraded itself or something.

Boot again in "diagnostics startup" (maybe you are already in?). Open services.msc, sort on startup type. Start the ones marked "startup type=automatic" one by one. Some will start and stop with a descriptive message like "service started but has stopped again becuase noone needs it now" or something like that. Start about 10 services and test if system still works fine. Then start more "startup type=automatic" services. In the end all those services are started fine.

clean boot=all NON-microsoft services disabled, no startup items. =>still problems
diagnostic boot=even all "non critical microsoft services" are disabled as well=>no problems

Diagnostic Startup Starts in safe mode with only basic device drivers and services active.
I conclude it's a driver problem. Most likely the "display adapter". Goto "device manager", double click "display adapters", right click the adapter installed there and "uninstall"... remove drivers from system in next popup.

Don't reboot yet. Open msconfig and select "normal boot". Apply the changes and reboot

I have two display items listed under Display adapters,

Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M

should I uninstall both of them?

Intel HD Graphics 4000 is integrated on motherboard as far as I know. uninstall it completely as explained earlier. shutdown, enter bios and try to disbale onboard video if you can find it. Intel HD Graphics 4000 is gone from list in "display adapters" now?

right click on empty spot on desktop->resolution->advanced sttings->adpater. Now you know what adapter you're using

When I uninstalled Intel HD Graphics 4000 my display went to black and I was forced to shut it down manually. I am currently in the BIOS and after checking the support page for my notebook, it does look like I am one version behind on the BIOS, could that be the issue here?

BIOS is not the issue (I don't know why).

So HD intel graphics is gone... but it seems you needed it. Are you able to boot to windows (or safe mode)?
