What don't you like about Windows 7?

I had posted multiple threads when I had the issues...all gave me answers to do a reinstall. Even redownloaded the RC 3 times to try and see if I had corrupted data. Just seems to not want to work for me.

I just checked and you haven't made a thread concerning the XBOX nor any compatibility issues...

You did make two threads on activation/genuine issues and issues with getting your IR remote to work

So far i dont like what they have done to:

  • Windows Media Player has been ruined, while 11 was not perfect, i liked it but now its ugly and unwieldy
  • Windows Photo Gallery has disappeared and i dont like windows live.
  • Control Panel is ugly as sin and is now pointless
  • Games Explorer adding games and changing the icons or getting it to show info is ridiculous
  • Virtual PC only supports 3 OS's and only on a certain Service Pack for integration features to work. WTF
  • In the Start menu links point to libraries,i dont use them or want them can i change it to point to folder i want ?
  • Microsoft is still forcing us to install all there apps along with the OS. A simple screen while installing with tick boxes next to everything would be great so i could untick what i dont want
  • 600,000 versions lol Why not have just one version ????????
  • Copying Files is slower than it was in Vista
  • Microsoft had an app fo XP called bootvis that was 1mb in size, the equivalent for windows 7 is the Microsoft Windows Performance Toolkit which is only available through an SDK download and the smallest you can get it is 530 mb. Once again WTF
  • still no easy way to make the user folder point to a different drive or partition
  • Cant show date and time in small taskbar with small icons
  • Resising a partition to the left requires downloading other software. WHY?
  • Unable to arrange icons inside a folder the way i want them to be. WHY?????
  • il add more as i come across them
  • etc etc

Umm windows has less apps than Vista did. No email client. No photo management. No movie maker. All of these need to be downloaded in the Live Essentials pack, which you can choose what you want. So I suppose the apps you are talking about are paint, word and media center. Do they really bother you that much?

There are really only two versions (microsoft has confirmed this view) - Home Premium and Professional. Just like XP, you have home and business. The others are included either for emerging markets (Starter, Home Basic) or enterprise (Ultimate). but does it really matter? unless you work at a computer retailer and have to advise on the right choice (of which there really are only 2), then it really doesn't matter all that much?

For the apps iv answered that before but ok i just dont like having stuff on the pc i wont use. When you install a programme and it asks if you want to install some crappy bar as well do you leave it ticked?

Ok taking away starter editions etc you are still left with 6versions of windows 7.

Home Premium 32bit
Proffesional 32bit
Ultimate 32bit

And then you have the same as above but in 64 bit versions. Why not just release 1 version. Windows 7 ultimate 64bit, they could just call it Windows 7. It doesnt bother me as i know what version i needed but i get asked and there are threads on this forum about why the OS wont recognise all their ram, why they cant run virtual pc, why cant they change language etc etc.

Remember that these are just my gripes with windows 7, you dont have to agree with them :)

Well, some people don't want to use 64bit for whatever reason, or have older hardware...

What I don't like about Windows 7 - two things, a small and a big one:

1. Small - in Windows Explorer, when I browse into a folder and right-click on one of the subfolders, it doesn't pop up the menu for that subfolder unless I have first selected selected the subfolder by left-clicking on it. If I haven't selected it by left-clicking on it, I get the menu for the folder which I am currently browsing (the folder that the subfolder is a subfolder of. If you take my meaning.) This is somewhat irritating as I've been doing a lot of right-clicking on folders recently to try and set up some sharing stuff.

2. Big - An Administrator is not actually an administrator. I keep running into files/folders that I can't delete or change permissions on, etc etc. I know that Microsoft is trying to prevent computer idiots from going into C:\Windows\System32, looking at files and saying, "I don't know where I got all these files! Why do I need them? *delete*" However, I wish there were a small setting somewhere, maybe make it hard to find so that the idiots won't go clicking on it all the time, but a setting to turn on "Advanced Administrator Mode" or something, which would give me FULL permissions to do anything and everything that I want to. (For instance, do things like delete the Windows.old folder that was using up almost 50 GB of my hard drive. I had to use the Drive Cleanup utility to get rid of it.) Maybe when you turn on this setting it would pop up a message saying, "You are about enable Advanced Administrator Mode. By doing this you remove almost all safeguards that are in place to prevent you from deleting important files or damaging your computer. Do you really wish to continue?" It wouldn't even have to be permanent - make it something that I can go turn on when I want to do some heavy-duty drive cleanup, change some big system settings, set up sharing stuff (I don't have access to enable permissions on my user folder), etc, and then turn it off when I'm done. The way it is now, I can't do half the things that I want to.

  1. Small: I really don't have a clue why you have this issue. Mine WE works just as you told you would like it to work: When I hover over an folder or file and right click, I always get the context menu for that item, without first left clicking.

Here is my list:

(1) Windows Live Movie Maker cannot open all projects made with Vista's Movie Maker.
(2) Not all old programs work in XP Mode. For example, Microsoft's very own ISO mounting software does not work, which is bummber given (3).
(3) Windows 7 has no command for mounting ISO image (and see 2 above).
(4) Mircrosoft Virtual PC does not support 64bit guests.
(5) Windows XP Mode appears to be nearly undocumented thus far; it's fly by your pants when using it.
(6) Explorer 8 crashes a lot (although this seems to be slowly improving).
(7) Can't play Blu ray movies natively.
(8) Can't play Real media natively.
(9) Adobe still hasn't made a 64-bit flash plug-in (not 100% Microsoft's fault :)).
(10) Windows backup does not offer the option to automatically back-up EFS Certificate.
(11) EFS documentation needs to be updated.
(12) No native support for Adobe DNG format and camera RAW formats.
(13) There really should be, by now, an included document management feature ala Paperport. Windows Scan does not cut it.
(14) They should have native support for pdf, instead of wasting time inventing XPS.
(15) Printing from XP Mode could be easier.
(16) I waste way too much time worrying about Win 7!!

I'll you what I don't like... the personalization menu. It doesn't make any sense. When you change some part of the current theme, it assumes you want to save that as a new theme instead of saving under the current one. When you choose a desktop wallpaper it seems to randomly decide which pictures you want to have rotate. You check one image, and suddenly they're all checked, but it's difficult to tell. You select a new wallpaper folder and it checks every image automatically. It's completely unintuitive.

+1 Its MUCH easier than the ordeal in XP, its really just as easy to do it in Vista... but i still prefer the 7 way :D

As Administrator, you can give your self the right to delete any files you wish (so long as they're not locked by an application). It's convoluted but it works.

I've used a registry hack (found here) to add a "take ownership" option to the right-click menu for any folder, but even after doing that there are many folders I can't really mess with as much as I'd like to.

Like the Windows.old folder. It wouldn't let me just delete it, even after I transferred ownership, etc. to myself. Also, it gives me error messages about access being denied when I try to change the permissions on my user folder.
