I always talk to Pamela, my computer. She sometimes talks back, but unlike women normally do, she only talks when I allow it (by turning Ease of Access > Narrator on).

She fulfills almost all my non-physical needs, does everything I ask when I ask. Sometimes she is a bit cranky like any other female, but if I in these rare occasions really listen to her we can normally sort our differences out.

A perfect mistress. And really sexy, wearing this fabulous Seven!

That is one of my personal beefs. WTH? I know TONS of people that used a second tool bar like I did. It was one of the first things I tried to do seting up the beta for the first time... but nope!

WIndows 7 says, "NO TOOLBAR FOR YOU!"

That and the fact that pinning a fiolder to the main tool bar did not automatically make it do somthing useful...

I love the new tool/task bar but it's functionality is quite limiting in some areas.

Man, this thread has certainly been educational! All the gripes voiced have actually taught me how to get at/use Win7 features I didn't even know existed! It has taken me three days to reach thread's end! After reading the first 40 pages I wised up and realized I didn't want to hear about any problems/bugs that may have been fixed in the final release. So I fast forwarded to thread pages in late October when it was released to OEM's. I've only been using Win7 a few weeks now and have to admit I really like it. First day or two was challenging, as I am coming from XP with no Vista "initiation", but I'm getting comfortable with it now.

I'm the (not so) lucky one in the family who has the job of setting up, installing, configuring and maintaining our pc's, as my hubby is a technophobe, to put it mildly. I'm not a power user, but am pc literate enough to have kept us virus/trojan/bsod free for 5 years now. Our new HP Pavilion p6270z has 8GB ram so Win7 (preinstalled) is having no problems at all operating at the speed of light, it seems. Many of the Win7 features posters have indicated they are unhappy with I do not use at all and may never use. Admittedly, for the most part we only use our pc for internet access and email now, as we're both retired teachers. But I have to say we're both happy with Win7 and hope it continues to run smoothly for us as it has thus far.

Well it's clear why toolbars disappeared, the docking system where you can put windows side byside by just dragging them to the sides.. A cool feature actually. BUT BUT BUT...

The vast majority will love this OS. Especialy a lot of those comming from Vista. It has a a myriad of cool features, and options. It's very stable, and although it's far from perfect, it is a realy nice OS. A lot of work has gone into it.

Like anything new however, anything that changes the way we work has a major impact. Some features native to Windows have gone away; others have moved. The former is a major beef with me, and the latter is a sore spot. Some (Like me) gripe in the very small hope, that some of the Menus/Options/Programs may someday be returned. The things that have been moved, can be relearned.

As you may have noticed, there are a lot of third party options mentioned to do what the previous OS versions used to do natively. I gripe not only in the (Perhaps vain) hope things will be returned to the OS; but also, because I wonder why they were removed in the first place. I feel, we should not have to rely on these third party programs to replace things the OS did natively. Some things have been removed, because there is a different way to do the same thing. I can understand that. Others were ripped out with nothing but third party software to fill the void.

I have found, there is little simpathy from those who don't use the same menus/options/programs. Others wonder what the fuss is about over something seemingly so small. For all of us though, "major" changes are difficult. Even if the changes don't seem so major to someone else. hence we gripe, and beg for understanding.

(Sometimes over and over. sorry.)

I first want to say, glad you like 7.

I don't want this to sound like i am scolding, or lecturing and I am not trying to start anything, but inform you for furture purchases.

I don't know how much you spent on the extra RAM, but 2G to 4G would have been plenty for your system with a much better video card added if all you are doing is surfing the net and maybe a casual game or 2. If you are gaming,, then 4G would be plenty with a better video card.

8G of ram was way over kill unless you are doing heavy Graphics and/or Audio editing, or AutoCAD, or Virtual Machines or something like that.

In the future remember,, unless you are doing any of those things,,, save the money on the RAM and spend it on better video card. You will get MUCH much more bang for your buck. The 210 is ok, but I think you could have gotten much better, and about 4 to 6G of the ram you have is actual going to waste and not even being utilized.

So, don't take what I am saying the wrong way, just information.

I'm afraid you'll have to always rely on third-party tools in the future. There's no way that the "Up arrow" is coming back to Windows. Breadcrumbs are the future. Just like the ribbon UI of MS Office. If you take a little effort to get used to these features, it will not only improve your productivity, but also save you the hours wasted in finding third-party tools.

I second that. Love the Breadcrumbs. Excellent addition to Explorer.
I would love to see tabs and/or panes added, similar to FreeCommander.
There is a lot more flexibility that can be added, that isn't there, that should be. That is my only complaint. Still it works. So, no other complaints.

The "reason" for the removal of features or just particular ways of doing things in win7 is an extremely complex one.

One of the major criticisms of Vista was the bloat of the operating system which contributed to some of the other issues such as the hardware requirements required to run the system effectively.

There is also the considerations of certain markets where Microsoft's perceived monopoly is under attack.

Most users will probably use about 20% of the features of an OS the problem arises as this is likely to be a different 20% from any other.

when designing win7 my understanding is that Microsoft checked their feedback as to what features/methods were least used and tailored the OS to the needs of the majority.

I feel for those who have lost a feature or functionality that was important to them, but overall I think that the result of this "pruning" has left us with a better product overall.

The ergonomics of the UP arrow was never something that I found particularly useful as I would rarely need to just go up one folder level, so for me a combination of the breadcrumb trail, the navigation pane and the back button was always my working method. I can understand that for others this is a serious annoyance, but one that can be re-learned with a probable increase in efficiency

That would be to the fact that certain applications are programmed not to update there window when minimized, this saves on resources. It is up to the application developer if they want to constantly update even when minimized.
