What don't you like about Windows 7?

'pinned' being the key word.

I know favorites are still there, but when I scroll down the navigation pane, the favorites scroll up off the screen. Back in Vista they were pinned so they'd always be there in the upper left of windows explorer.

My life involves a whole lot more scrolling now that I moved to Win7.

No, you're still missing my point. I had to search the net for an image of windows explorer in vista because I no longer have vista installed anywhere. So if you look at the following screen shot ...

You see the "Favorite Links" in the upper left? Documents, Pictures, Music, etc. Then the folders are under that section. Well that whole section was pinned and didn't move. You could scroll up and down 10,000 folders if you wanted in the folders section, and those Favorite Links stay there. Well in Windows 7, it has the favorites, but they are not pinned and move when you scroll through folders. That is a HUGE disadvantage for how I use my computer as I was used to dragging folders into the favorites link, navigating through a ton of folders below them, but always being able to drag things into folders I had in the favorite links. I hate when Microsoft takes away a function I've been using for 2+ years with no reason or options. If they want to hide it fine, but don't just outright remove it. :shock:

Yet another edition of Windows, with underpinnings that are better than ever, but yet again more changes are introduced so you're forced to re-learn things. For instance, Vista was heavily criticized for its control panel that was a mess, now that everyone more or less adjusted themselves to it, but Win 7 took this mess one step further and turned the mess into a complete cluster-puzzle. Then you have the new superbar, and while its pretty nifty, why not leave the option to enable quicklaunch and classic start menu? Then you had Outlook Express that was supplied with Windows since I believe Win98, and was familiar to everyone who was using it. They replaced it with Windows Mail in Vista, which IMO is a lesser program but whatever, people got used to it... Just to have MS remove it completely from Win7, and force you to download yet another program, Live Mail, which is again completely different. Seriously, why would anyone want to do that, its probably much wiser to get a non MS mail client that has a record for consistency.

And don't even get me started on the ribbonization. Not only the ribbon is completely inefficient, it is also completely inconsistent with the interfaces of all other software, even most of Microsofts software.

Seriously, maybe I'm stubborn, maybe I'm stuck in my own ways, but you know what, I believe the simple concept - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate change, when change is for the better. I welcomed the revolutionary change Win95 brought over Win 3.x, I welcomed additional features and functionality future installments of windows brought over Win95, but ever since Vista I feel that its not so much new features but new ways to do the same things as before. And often the new ways are simply a complete and utter clusterpuzzle.

But if I had to choose one thing that I completely hate about Win7, more than anything else, it has got to be the new windows explorer (not IE). I really miss the clean, logical explorer in Windows XP that allowed easy customization.

my experience hasn't been great. after installing this Fri night, I had to get a tech to fix it. I still don't have my pst reinstalled. blocked out even after the Take Ownership. My cursor is jumping all over the place and takes 4x as long to type something, I don't know how do find files - I can see it mapped to a certain path - ie Local\appdata\microsoft... but if I try and find it myself, i can't find it. search doens't pull up anything. I am a frequent computer user but not a techie and I figure for the average suer, this is definitely going to be a change.

My experience with the whole security part of vista as well as windows 7 has been to make myself administrator the moment I installed Windows 7. It is the same thing I did with vista. Right after the installation is over I logged in to my account, enabled the administrator account ( Command Prompt type net user administrator /active:yes) then deleted my old user account. Logged back on to administrator and changed the name to my name in user accounts control panel. This removes almost all the BS when it comes to accessing files and such. The only files that really stay protected are system files and crucial registry keys, which can still be set to you as the owner if you really have to.


As for the search thing it takes a day or two for windows to index all of your files, and if where you are searching is not indexed, it will take a little bit longer

No offence mate, but I cannot help but feel intrigued by your dedication to the cause

You're of course entitled to your opinion, and your likes and dislikes, and nobody should try to convince you that you do actually like the ribbon and/or the non-classic start menu, despite yourself. Having said that, you presume quite a bit.

The majority of users like the new look. How do I know that? Because MS spend vast amounts of money and time doing market research. They're profit driven, as befits a publicly traded company which is bound by law to do its utmost to increase shareholder value. If their research had revealed to MS that the majority of users despised the interface updates as much as you do, those changes would never have seen the light of day.

Hence, either the focus groups are misrepresenting user preferences in their reports to MS decision makers, or your finger isn't quite as accurately placed on the pulse of user opinion as you think it is.

If I had to guess one way or the other...

I read and re-read your post. Then I re-read it once again. Then I remembered who you are and checked from your earlier posts if I had it right. I had.

It seems you are for some reason decided to join the anti-Seven task force. It is of course your right and I am not criticizing you because of that. However, I strongly feel that you should not use pseudo statistics and invented figures in your fight. It's interesting an refreshing to read arguments and counter arguments, why you and other users like or dislike the new Windows. As long as these arguments are true. I've learned a lot during the last months reading this topic; as a Windows Seven advocate it has given me some deeper understanding why and what people dislike in Seven, which understanding I (because of my enthusiasm) otherwise lack. But even my knowledge is limited, I still can tell when something I read here is not true.

Truth is better, no matter what you want to accomplish. Even if those figures were to be true (which they clearly are not) you have to remember that the world around us is changing and developing all the time.

By the way, I'm still waiting your response to my offer for your cost issue.

Has it not occurred to anyone yet that what Libraries does is save your files?

It allows you to store your stuff wherever you want in your system, on any hard disk, any partition.

All you have to do is put your files in a folder somewhere other than the system drive/partition and add that folder to the relevant library, or create a new one.

That way, if your system drive dies, as mine unfortunately did a few days ago, your data is still safe, as it is physically somewhere else.

That alone should be the single most important reason for using the feature.

The Librbary is only a hard link, people!!

PS: I'm waiting for A***e to implement something similar and say they invented the whole concept....

Right on the spot, if everyone could just do that and coupled with a good Anti-Virus then We'd be golden as far as most issues are concerned. But unfortunately not everyone can do that.... +1

Agreed, the library is a welcome and very practical feature of Windows 7. I link my mp3s and videos to it too.

Upon installation, my first task was to create a backup/bootable DVD, which it did, although it took a lot longer than expected. Still, it worked. Then a complete backup onto another hard drive which took even longer. Still. it worked. So, I am happy with that feature that hopefully works.

But unless I cannot find it, or the Help file is wrong, you cannot make a Restore Point. I am really disappointed if this is true. In the past, I always create a RP just before a major change, ie, installing or installing major software, hardware, etc. But a user created RP seems to be missing from Win 7. The help file says win 7 will create RP's as "they" think are needed.

Well, sorry to not have much faith in MS to determine when I believe a RP is a nice safety net. Making Win7 slimmer and faster is great, I love it, but why remove that simple feature?

I'm sorry but I don't get it. I've used Windows XP since 2003 and switching to windows 7 was not a big deal at all.

Why would you rely so heavily on a system being a specific way? If you can't be adaptable and learn new things I have no sympathy for you. It's not like we went from easy to horrifically difficult; it's more like from easy to even easier after you get used to it.

I honestly have not noticed a huge difference; it took me all of 10 minutes to figure out how to navigate and use the Windows 7 interface. What is so complicated about the control panel or the libraries?

Also, what is so difficult about typing like an adult or at least using some type of spell check?
