What don't you like about Windows 7?

I CANNOt stand libraries. Stop telling me how to organize. I want to have links to the real folders, not a general label to it.

I understand your frustration. I'm not crazy about libraries either because I'm somewhat of a control freak when it comes to my folder organization, but it's a nice feature to have if you have similar file types scattered all over the place. What I hate is that certain programs absolutely INSIST on using or including the libraries without giving you the option to say no (windows media center for example). It was the same with XP and the My Documents folder... hated all the "My" folders with a passion.

Anyway, I would gladly live without Libraries if it meant having 'free-space-available' restored to the explorer status bar so that I don't have to go way back up to "Computer" to see it (this feature was apparently removed due to Libraries).

Back to XP for me and no return to the magnificent 7

I agree that 7 is lovely compared with Vista, but what has been made clear on this forum is that it's no big compliment because XP was better than Vista. I so agree with the complaints about how 7 knows better than the user when wanting to configure the PC. (by the way I also detest Libraries and gave up trying to re-configure 7 without them). Despite the lovely 7 interface I think there is just too much going on behind the scenes when 7 is being so clever guessing what it thinks you are trying to do. I spend lots on my hardware, quad core, nvidia GTX, DDR3, you name it and I have been dissapointed by it. But one dissapointment I cannot get over is the staccato way 7 works. It sounds like I am splitting hairs and being negative but the bottom line is that I hate waiting for just two or three seconds to open folders and launch word documents or excel spreadsheets. Even Adobe reader has to have a meeting with 7 before they will agree to print page 2 and not the others. XP does not do screen fades and shaking or blending things. In fact it's more like a PC experience than the movie or MAC effects experience of 7...... It does not show you files and images you didn't know you had when you open a folder, it does not show you images other people on the network don't know they have! Fact is XP isn't very clever at all but with all it's warts and clunky old file system it does snap to it when you want to bash of a nasty letter in Word, photoshop an image or fight frames in Dreamweaver. So goodbye 7 you are off to ebay and here I go again re-installing XP, (and I will no doubt go through this all again when 8 arrives!)

Libraries and "my folders"

Well said! Absolutely my meaning. I think I'm very open for new things in life and I don't stick on old traditions, but also I have my personal way to organize my folders and files. So I never use all this "my" folders stuff neither.

It makes me mad to be forced to click on "my computer" first, select the harddisk in order to be able to access folders.

On the other hand I remember the old days where unexperienced users never found their files again and they usually had a big mess with their (mis-) organization of files. For such people the "my" folders and library philosophy is for sure a good thing.

But this means that it would be nice to have an overall setting in Windows to decide if the computer is used by a "my" folder user (e.g. my 70 year old mother) or an experienced user that would like to organize things themeself.


Windows Explorer

Also I'm still no friend of the Windows Explorer, I simply can't live without "Total Commander" where I'm fast like hell with only keyboard commands and shortcuts to do things.


Logon Screen

Another thing - but actually it's really a detail - I hate the login screen. Fortunately "Tweak Logon Changer" makes it a piece of cake to switch between different pictures to be used for the logon screen.


UAC

One of the most annoying things still is the UAC where for some programs I'm asked EVERY TIME for permission to start it. Thanks to Brink that also this is solved now for me with

The UAC is not a bad thing at all. The only thing I miss is the possibility to apply permissions selective on specific programs.

Two things. I use mac and PC and while I am more of a pro user as in audio picture, I can't figure out why Microsoft with it's millions can't figure out an iLife competitor....

Why in the world would Microsoft need to do that? Microsoft Office sales more copies then iLife could ever imagine. Office is also seeded in most cooperate and households environments. There are more features packed into Microsoft Word then the entire iLife suite.

Well word is the defacto standard. Eveyone knows that. Even if
you use a mac howevere, if you've ever sat down and play with pages you can do almost ( less color seperations) in pages that Adobes InDesign. Besides you can't edit movies with really good fx in word or use photo recognition for iPhoto. Let's be honest too, while I do see PC render farms and blades, people aren't making movies for tv and feature film FF with video Vegas but they are with final cut pro and if you ever used iMovie or iPhoto there are some pretty powerful features that are very easy to use. No adding a picture and having the text dissapear. As a strong Photoshop and fireworks user, you can do some nifty stuff with the free suite that looks better than most high end wedding videographers. In fact. I had a friend start out that way. He bought. New PC and Vegas then he saw iMovie and how easy it was to use so he started doing wedding part time or when he wasn't working. Less than a month later he had a G5 Ns final cut pro and got married, moved back home and is now a production manager for a video production house. True story. Some of the software just works without ever having to look at a manual. Remember when word came out with the ribbon and the public outcry? It was like everyone had to learn new commands. But let's not get off to tArget. The question was while ms does focus on business, why not focus on the creative sides of our nature. Creating a suite easy to use for creating things. Another example. In iphoto
they have a whilemsection on stuff you cancreate then purchase but most don't k ow if you do amcommand period (can't remember the exact keystroke ) you can save it as a PDF and print these project without buying them.

I dint know. Just wondering I guess why we never see a more easy to use creative side , thats all.

And to argue even more points, I've seen people photo/video/text edit better with free programs than with any pay for. Back when I used to work for a web site we had a contest using paint, yes paint! We had the topic of who could edit photo's in paint the best, and some of them come out really well. But that's just how good you are at art/editing. I draw, so of course I can work on computer art naturally because I have the insight for design. Though some programs are easier than others, that's just the facto of life. People will always bitch about who has the better program, or why you even need programX because it can be done in programY. It's really a debate of preference and that's all. I like gimp for photo, blender for cad, and openoffice for text. As far as video I haven't ever used a good video camera. but I'm sure I could find software in no time. That's just it though, a lot of people would have not even looked for linux alternatives because "linux sucks for most things". I do agree on one thing though, MAC has the best audio/video editing around. Everyone I know who does music says so, all the bands ect... Mac is where to go. But then again I know of people who made techno on a comadore64! lol It's all how you work it.

Years ago a few people I know used to swear by the Atari ST/E for the audio trackers and music software. I've got an Amiga 1200 in the attic with some tracker software on too lol

Yep, hardware hacking for stuff isn't un-common. It's why we still use tube amps, it'll give such a unique sound. =P And that's what really makes the music special, the sounds.

Anti-trust concerns would play a big factor in developing this software I would imagine. It would need to be a paid for separate program at least.

Lack of built in features.
Windows 7 is my first Windows computer since 2002 as I use an iMac as my main computer. over the years i tried differnt versions of windows and 7 is the frst one that I hae been happy with. Problem is there are many features that were standard in Mac OS that i don't understand why they are not built into the OS.
off the top of my head:
Disk utility alternative (bundled in Mac, does virtually anything that deals with drives, flash cards, other forms of long-term storage, and disk images)
Systeim-wide speel check
Antivirus
.pdf reader
multiple format extracting (.zip, .tar, .7z, eta)

tho i have to admit that there is a lot more included then in XP or even Vista.
and I'm aware that this would make some companies lose buisness.

really mac comes with anti virus? i thought macs couldent get viruses? i am thinking of getting a macbook pro but only because it has 7 hour battery life on the 15inch version then install win7 on it lol. i havent seen a windows pc with such a long battery life..

that would be good though for microsoft to provide free anti virus.. i pay 50 euros 2 years for nod32

plus the extracting you can extract .zip as always but then you have to pay for winrar which your right they should add more as you say .rar/.tar and the others

Yeah only mac server comes with an AV because most mac users do not get contact with viruses. if Apple one day said that they were bundling clamav into mac desktop it wouldn't bee good for their reputation.
The MacBook pro is a pretty good laptop and it finally has a SD card slot. If you use that to run 7 on you should have no problems.

I personally am happy that they did not bundle a bunch of apps. I have my list of free apps I load into any windows machine, and I would not want to shift away from that unless MS was to release a better option.

Aviara for AV,
tinyspell for spell checker,
PowerISO for disk utility,
Foxit Reader for Pdfs,
Winrar for extracting..

I know these apps well, and would not admire Windows for releasing apps that did the same thing, unless they did it better.. or offered something these other apps did not.. Windows is highly customize-able, especially in the apps department..

what do you use now? moved from imac back to win 7? or sticking with the imac? they look pretty good the new ones the designes
