What don't you like about Windows 7?

Status
Not open for further replies.
The issue with search is that it can be a very powerful tool, but the defaults are set to cater for the "average Joe" or "Joe-ess".

For the more advanced user these default settings may be less than ideal, but as there is a full set of customizations, that may be applied, this is less of a real issue.

Of course the fact that the set-up and functionality of search 4.0 is very different from that in XP and even Vista there is a learning curve involved.

I have found that once the customizations are complete and the application is familiar it is a match what is available via 3rd party solutions.

This of course is only my experience and YMMV :D

Could you be more specific please? :> I'm happy for tweaks in my registry if necessary

Another annoying thing in win 7 is that when closing system it always asks you if you want to force programs to close. I never manage to cancel it as it disappears quickly and I end up with corrupted opera and outlook 2007 profile. :/

incompatibility with older programs i guess...i would like to be able to control windows with spoken commands too (i know XP had something like this but it wasn't great, and i never used vista long enough to find out), but that might be asking for too much :P

otherwise windows 7 seems rather good, just can't complain about it :/

A good place to start would be our own tutorial on the subject ...

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/36098-search-options-change-restore.html?filter[2]=File%20Folder%20Settings

The indexing options dialogue has an advanced section that may be used to set exactly what is indexed and thus appears in search results.

There is also this from Microsoft ...

Windows Search: Searchable File Types

iFilters are freely available on the web to add internal file searching to the index for file types that are normally not well supported such as help files PDF Etc.

Problems -- the worst OS released by windows yet by far. Constant crashes -- can't even FIND large programs (like World of Warcraft) in the programs directory (lucky to find anything on this system -- you even have to figure out how to show the run command). Can't access BIOS -- useless program. They're trying to make this easier for people, but it's becoming harder to use.

I plan to uninstall and go back to XP -- even if I have to wipe my HD clean and start again.

Only on your computer. Maybe you should find out what has been installed to do that? Driver or incompatible application like an antivirus?

Uhh you press F2 (most cases) during the BIOS loading screen to get into BIOS's settings, not from Windows.

Most crashes happen because of non-working / wrong third party drivers. Are you sure you have correct drivers for your hardware?

By default, Windows 7 x86 installs all programs to C:\Program Files. Windows 7 x64 version installs 64-bit programs to C:\Program Files, and 32-bit programs to C:\Program Files (x86). If the installer uses Windows default install path, it's there. If installer uses other path, it's hardly Windows' fault.

Could you please tell me how do you access your computers BIOS from XP? Entering BIOS is done after POST, when Windows is not yet running, so I fail to see how Windows 7 could possibly make entering BIOS harder?

Kari

I don't share the same sentiment. In my opinion 7 is much faster than Vista. Check my specs... I have installed XP and all flavors of Vista and 7 on this system and Vista was the worst of the 3 by a large margin.

I would say something like the others, some incompatibility with older programs and hardware. My front stereo and microphone jacks are not working since it was installed.

I would also point out about Microsoft not changing the Registry Editor, they should have at least made an MMC snap in for that and also things like the Task Manager that could really use some renovation in the user interface.

Windows 7 is perfect apart from:
-Aligning icons to grid while set to small size seems to make them miles apart.
-Classic theme doesn't have classic start menu.
-Start 'orb' invades work area when taskbar is at top.

Oh, and Alt+arrow doesn't rotate the screen anymore.

Instead of using 3 keys to move a window, you can now use 2 in Windows 7. Press Windows Button + ANY Arrow

Results: Find out;)

That moves the window, but doesn't flip the display. Not sure why it doesn't work for you psychfunk, works for me...
It kind of does:
  • When active windows is on the right display, two times Win + Left Arrow snaps it to the right on the left display
  • When active windows is on the left display, two times Win + Right Arrow snaps it to the left on the right display
Very practical sometimes, because on multi display systems it is the only way to snap a window to the side if there exists an additional display on that side.
