Solved What exactly is virtual XP?

Just installing 7 professional and want to also install XP so I can run an old 32bit program on the same machine. What exactly is virtual XP and where and how is it installed? Is it downloaded or installed from an XP disc?

I believe you have to get it from Microsoft's website. What you want to search for is XP Mode. It will download two components, one being the virtual machine software and one being the actual virtual machine. Then you'll have a shortcut to run a version of XP that runs within a window, without rebooting your system.

My upgraded laptop will have windows 7 pro loaded in 4-5 days. It will be a full install from disc, and I will own the disc.

The program is Family Tree Maker 16 a genealogy program that only works on 32bit. It will load in Compatibility Mode in windows 7 home premium but I've read about problems doing it that way. It just seemed simpler to install onto virtual XP.
