I am attempting to install Windows server 2012 R2 64 bit on Virtual Box. I am reading online and there are some videos that say that I need something called "Pfsense"? Is that right? I have never heard of it.

I jsut want to know what all is needed (software, settings, etc) to have server 2012 up and operational. This is just for a home network, as I am testing and learning. I just would like to know what settings I need in order to install. Are there settings that need set up first? If so, what settings? I seem to get an error that says "a critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine.

This is after setting the amount of space. Nothing in settings were set up, does it need reinstalled? It was a fresh install.

What version of VB are you using? I am using version 4.3.10 r93012 and took all the defaults (2048 for RAM, 25GB disk space), didn't change anything. Windows Server R2 2012 x64 installed fine and runs cleanly, don't get any errors.

Pfsense is a open-source firewall and there is no need to install it in order to install Server 2012.

Are getting an error when creating the VM or when you try to start the VM?

No special software or settings required. Just be sure to select Windows 2012 as the Version when creating the virtual machine. This will configure the virtual machine as needed.

What CPU do you have (full number)? The CPU must support hardware virtualization. Other requirements are the same as for Windows 8.1

Check the error you're getting, when VirtualBox detects an error it shows details about it (there is a button to expand the error dialog to show the cause). It may help to pinpoint the exact problem.
My wild guess would be insufficient memory, that the guest system is trying to allocate more than the host has available.
