Sometimes I see exessive hard disk activity, and when i check Task Manager I find a process called TrustedInstaller.exe. I've heard it has something to do with Windows Update, but it's not installing or downloading any updates (I check this in Control Panel). It probably just is some new crap that Windows 7 has, but does anyone have any explanations to what it does and why it's there? And has anyone else ssen this in Task Manager?

Thank you!

I have the same problem. How so I stop TrustedInstaller from hogging about 25% of my CPU? (Win7 x64)
And how can I tell if it has been taken over by a virus?

i was getting system messages about low memory, and closing programs and losing data. when i checked to see why this was happening, i found trustedinstaller.exe using 4G memory. naturally the first thing i had to do was shut down this process. but the question remains why is windows allowing this program using such a high amount of memory

Trustedinstaller is a major part of the windows security systems It's a high ranking system user that holds ownership of the majority of the program files on any windows system.

The user is placed between the regular admin level and that of the hidden administrator user so that any malware process acting with the rights of a regular tokenized admin, cannot do as much damage

Trusteduser.exe application is used as part of this system although what it actually does is not fully available as this would compromise the security of the system.

I do not know of a reason that Trustedinstaller.EXE should be using huge amounts of memory unless it was in an update process with a number of applications or system files.

I would do full scans for malware to confirm that malware is not the cause and the Trusted installer should go back to normal on it's own, once it has finished it's tasks

I refuse to trust ANY .exe that mysteriously shows up on my computer - claiming to be TrustedInstaller.exe - without giving me the opportunity to evaluate and potentially BLOCK whatever it's installing! Now looking for a way to BLOCK this sucker before it does damage. It's obviously *arriving* over the 'net. (I keep Windows Update confined to "select updates to install.")

Fortunate enough to successfully apply monthly updates for several months... now VERY concerned about losing my device to 4515206 or 4474419. Advice??
Hi Billm5,

TrustedInstaller AKA Windows Module Installer is located in local services

you can turn if off there
BUT its a good way to break your system as multiple drivers will not load
