What use is TOUCH on a laptop screen

Hi there
I see more and more laptops are being sold now with Touch enabled screens -- Now using a laptop in the Classical position I.e with the screen at RIGHT ANGLES (Vertically) to the desk what possible use is touch.

Now if it has a detachable screen or can work in Tablet mode (as a convertible) that's fine but as a standard laptop -- what would you USE the touch facility for even if you were running Windows 8.

Touch is fine on accessory devices such as drawing devices which you would have placed HORIZONTALLY on your desk or if you were using "Electronic Drawing table" type devices - but on a bog standard laptop screen. But on a standard Laptop. ?? - Maybe on a Train / Plane if you were using the computer as an e-book reader - but if you just wanted to read would you be using a computer anyway -- e-readers are ridiculously cheap now.

All it does is just push up the price of the laptop for NO BENEFIT WHATSOEVER.

Am curious - anybody here got a laptop with Touch - and what are they actually using touch for.

I totally agree with you jimbo. I bought a new laptop a few weeks ago and specifically looked for one that did NOT have a touchscreen. I tried out the touchscreen models in the stores and decided touch is not a good interface for larger screens. Works great on my phone and tablet but requires too many exaggerated arm movements on the larger screen. Constantly moving between touching the screen and going back to the keyboard was a pain as well.

I would put it under the "Bells and Whistles" category. I was asking myself the same question as I used a Windows 8 touchscreen laptop. I found myself lazily scrolling through things and occasionally touching things instead of clicking. Useful for real work? Maybe. I have used ( optical, not capacitive ) touchscreens on Windows 7 and also found myself wondering what they're for

"Bells and Whistles", yes. Also adds significantly to the cost.

My neighbors grand daughter just got a touch screen laptop (Levo) and helped her set it up by removing bloatware along with adding SAS, MBAM and MSE.
She is constantly cleaning the smeared screen. Advised her when she got home to get screen protector and or a wireless mouse.
The Bells and Whistles aren't worth the extra cost IMHO!
