What would you ask a Windows 7 engineer?

I thought liberaries was a nice addition... till I tried to use it with my new NAS: no go. When will this function become mature and include more than local data only?

Just added a folder from my remote HTPC to my libraries on my laptop without a problem.
Problem must be with the NAS.
Note: The folder you want to add has to be a shared folder.

Did you accomplish this without syncing the total folder to your local hard drive? I have read several posts, all with more or less the same problem.

You can place a request and tell why in ten lines. That should be enough.
The door is closed to endless argumentation and rants.
We can do that in the hundreds of other threads here.

Remember I have to read each and everyone of them, and while not visible there,
I actually contact people in PM to elaborate or clarify what they mean. It is a lot of work.
Without some form of discipline it will end up in chaos, and the purpose of the thread would be lost.

What you are doing has been done over and over in the beta forums.

I beg to differ.
On every Windows forum I visited that tried something similar,
it ended up in the fore-mentioned ranting and discussion.
MS devs are not going to wade through all the rants, insults,
and mile long debates to see if there's something useful in it.

That's why I hope that this method will have a better chance.
They are not going to read this thread here, so if you want your voice to be heard,
I still suggest you place it in the Request thread.

Your complaint about the folder re arrangement is a legitimate one,
and it's already in the list.

And like you show with the tweak suggestion, there's always tweaks and hacks.

And let's be fair, we love to tweak. That's why we don't want Mac's right?

But hey, maybe someone will listen (???)

When the list has grown a little, I will do all I can to contact Microsoft,
and make them aware of the thread, if they aren't already.
Sevenforums is nr1 on google search.

And yes, let's hope they'll listen.

I wasn't putting down your valiant efforts to try to get Microsoft to go with the flow. They have done it in the past. I just wanted to mention (you did anyways) that it is a tedious job.

When I said beta forums, I meant Microsoft closed beta forums. I was also on the French beta team and there were some solid arguments given. Yes there were rants but the general message was really echoed in the feedback tool on the connect site. There, rants were not very present. I think that one of the top suggestions was iso creation.

I didn't take your post as criticism, and my post back wasn't meant as such to.
That's the limitation of text.

You had some valid arguments, and so had I.

I think MS did do something with the input of the closed Beta forums,
but you can't win them all.
It's like politics or negotiations.
Ask as much as you can so hopefully some of your points actually make it into the product.

I think the ISO thing has to do with legal matters, like RAR.
If MS puts that in, they will have another lawsuit on their hands.

Personally I hope they do something about the search option in Explorer.
It's pretty useless. But it always was, also in XP.

This is because folders must be indexed first in order to be added to a library, and network drives cannot be indexed unless they are synchronized. This will show you how to do that and add them to a library

I thnk you have luck cause your htpc is also indexed, but it leaves out a lot of users, like me.

Yes, Indexing must be enabled for that folder on the remote machine.
No syncing enabled on any of my machines.

When you have a shared folder on an internal or external disk on computer1,
you can add them to the libraries of computer2 without synchronizing.

On a separate network drive (NAS) synchronizing might be required,
not sure, I have no NAS, I run a server.

If anything RDP should activated on a Home Premium machine when a WHS is in the network. Backwards thinking and a bit cold blooded in my opinion.

Hmmm... I had read over and over again that the client side of RDP, which is the piece used to connect to WHS for the under-the-covers admin, is available on Win7 Home Premium.

My understanding is that it is the server component of RDP, or the piece that allows other computer to connect to it, was the piece of RDP not in Home Premium.

What am I missing? Is the client side of RDP also left out of Home Premium?

Hi coolwalker,

You should open your own thread for this, because this question will be interesting for others.

But to answer you.

Documents and Settings is not a real location like it used to be.
The real data can be found in the Users folder.

Documents and Settings is maintained as a sort of virtual folder that links to Users,
to ensure compatibility with older programs that expect and/or require the presence of Documents and Settings.

I recommend not to mess with the Documents and Settings shortcut,
like changing permissions and such.
