Yes. AVG has a lower detection rate, a higher false positive rate, and is more likely to cause BSOD.

Out of the free versions, Avast!

AVG Free does not offer the same level of rootkit protection as the paid AVG (this is changing in the 2011 product currently in beta).

Out of the paid versions, Avast! Even when the paid version of AVG is tested against Avast! Free, Avast! usually does better.

With AVG Free my family has had both a success story and a failure story. Edit: The failure story could have had a lot to do with the user.

I've never used Avast! for any extended period of time.

Personally, I never really like either one.

But, thats not the question.

Given a choice between the 2, I would have to say Avast.

Was always something about AVG I just didn't like. And Avast seemed to do a better job.

Mind you, its been a couple years since I tried them so ...

+1. Avast is much lighter than AVG and also has high detection rates.

Avast is rated higher than AVG. Ask the BSOD guys about AVG causing BSOD. I've personally used Avast since XP. Check out Avira Antivir as well, even better rated than Avast. A Guy

I prefer Avast!. I have used it since version 4.x. I must say that it has high detection rates, fast scanning speed, low impact on system performance, and good malware removal capabilities. The GUI looks awesome!

I don't trust AVG because of its poor reviews. Last time I used Grisoft AVG was in 2005 or 2006. I wasn't satisfied at all.

Hi, Mitch656.

Let's put it this way -- I see considerably more posted logs of infected computers with AVG than I do with Avast.

I like my eggs over medium, hash browns and sour dough toast.

With that said....
I like MSE and will run Avast once a month just to keep it updated and see how it is working.
You couldn't pay me enough to install AVG on my system.

Unfortunately, I used AVG free for a few years(before it was totally boated). Then I decided to take the deal on the 2 year license. Each version change added more and more crap to it, and it was as bloated as a Best Buy laptop by the time I stopped using it. It never caused me a BSoD, but it just got noticeably worse over time. I actually dumped it about 6 months before my 2 year license expired and got MSE. Never looked back.

I, personally, would NOT ever recommend AVG to anyone. I've never used Avast, but even then, I'd still recommend using it over AVG.

AVG was fine in its time but after that, it went quickly downhill and became even more bloated than McAfee in some regards, except it wasn't nearly as reliable. I would recommend Avast over AVG any day of the week. Personally, I use MSE but if I had to choose between the two options given here, Avast would be my choice.

I have used AVG and Avast. From my experience Avast is way better because it has great looking interface, higher detection rates, very low system footprint and it doesn't cause BSODs.

I dont use either of two but will give my vote to Avast....because yes AVG has lot issue & 1 might never get a 100% scan even done 5-6 times in a day...little slow as compared to Avast...lot of CPR & RAM usage...

As per usual I will a lone voice supporting AVG.
IMHO it is not the pariah that it has been painted.

AVG Anti Virus Pro [yes I choose to pay for it] has been the AV of choice here.
Have used it on XP Pro x2 ,Vista Ultimate 64-bit x2 & Win7 Ultimate 64-bit, a total of 5 computers.
Suffice to say I am extremely happy & will keep using it. NO BSOD's, NO false positives & it is NOT bloated as claimed so often.
Millions of AVG users can't all be wrong.

Off topic - Yes I am a great supporter of Vista also. :sarc:
