What's your Internet Speed?

Less than 2Mb D/L speed is not so bad comparing to the speed in China. But I am really shocked  as I thought the network speed in USA is quite fast. (It should at least around 4M in my mind)

It depends on where you live in the U.S.A., what services are available, and how much you want to pay...

Note: Actual D/L speeds are about 15Mb/s, something called "Powerboost" doubles that for the first few megabytes :-)

TBH I'm shock at the speed you have in the USA. Ed 29Mb down is not bad, may I ask how much that cost's please.
I've an 80/20Mb connection with Throughput of 76.53/16.49Mb and that cost's me $42 US give or take (£26).

Hello Paul1360,

My internet connection costs about $50.00 dollars/month. I'm envious of your speeds!

There are many reasons for the wide variations in internet speeds available here in the U.S.A. Some are political, some are economic. Rural areas suffer because of the vast distances and low population densities make it uneconomical for ISP's to upgrade the infrastructure. Some folks might propose taxpayer subsidies to the ISP's, or taxpayer-provided internet services as a solution, others might point out the unfairness of making someone else pay for their internet access. It is a touchy subject.

There are areas where we can get speeds like yours for about $100.00/month (big cities mostly), and other areas (mostly rural) where only dial-up (56kb) or satellite internet is available. Where I live they are rolling out packages similar to yours now.

Ed,
I live in a rural area and as stated have a bad BB speed until a year ago and then it went crazy with the increase and then several days ago BT did an uplift of speeds and am now on double the speed. Just read a report from BT who own run and are rolling out the infrastructure that from the 12th they are going to start trials on a variant of 330Mb down / 80Mb up, the trial will be free but they have not given out any price's for this. I really thought your speeds were a lot better than here, alas shows how far off I was lol. By the way I had a hard time getting FTTC to our area, as we are so far from the exchange and told there would be little take up. That has proved wrong as they have had to put another DSLAM in as the first filled up fast lol.

Thanks, rcn is fantastic in my area which is why I've been with them for over a decade. No caps and no fuss no matter how bad i abuse it:devil:
But looking at my test history it seems like things improved a little around the time I switched to the intel nic. Not saying its definitely the reason but things seem to flow smoother since. It was cheapest one available at newegg -$22 i think.

Zahl,
Sorry BB= BroadBand, FTTC = Fibre To The Cab, FTTP/H= Fibre To The Premises/Home/House, That's how we say it over the pond, you have any limits on downloads? The top package is nearly Twice the cost of my package.

Doh sorry i missed that:o But yes the US is pretty bad with speeds and prices:( If you think that rcn is bad you should see comcast's prices and they have a super crappy 250GB monthly cap! RCN is insanely cheaper with no caps or throttles and no useless powerboost crap. I have passed the TB mark quite a few times in a month which means no chance of ever using anyone else

Feast your eyes on these prices with caps and throttles thrown in

Zahl,
um I'm lost for words with comcast $200 for 105Mb speed with 250Gb usage limit. Here it's $57 for 100Mb speed unlimited usage.
1TB in a month download wow that is some amount, here's me thinking my average 130Gb a month is high :o, Just been on a forum and a guy there is worried that he has used 11Gb this month lol

Yup its definitely sad and disgusting  But I am not alone in the house and everyone goes ballistic with buying games and such online and as long as it's legal i don't care how much they download.
But downloading that much is very rare for us but at times have gone way over it too. I think we probably use around 200GB a month -too close for a cap from comcast. Last month I rocked it when i lost my steam hd and had to redownload everything. If I was on comcast just downloading my steam collection would have taken me over five months with no other usage at all. These days buying two nice games online can use up well over 30gb of a cap which is why its crazy to have one in the first place

Jeff, OK np any reason why your speed gets capped??

Zahl,
Putting usage caps on lines is just another way for ISPs to get more money off it's customers, and as we all know ISPs will say no no no that's wrong it's to protect the network lol.
