What's your Internet Speed?

... but all 3 are subject to fair use policy, that mean once you have downloaded a certain amount over a certain period of time you get your broadband throttled.

Ah, yes, FAP, Fair Access Policy.

A few years back, I had a satellite ISP and encountered their FAP often. When they throttled my connection it was about 1/2 speed of dialup, virtually unusable!

I am not sure about the other ISP's but Virgin Media, (who are just Telewest under a different name) just halve your bandwidth once you exceed you limit.

lol.. I guess DSL is the "dialup" of the new century. My ping time is not too bad though, for what it's worth.

despite BT having unlimited broadband, it was capped at 100gb per month and your connection would be slower the following month.
with BT INFINITY(fiber optics).unlimited, there is no cap
although they do still throttle p2p traffic at peak times of the day, overnight is the best time to use p2p.
though with superfast broadband then off peak times usually see a download complete very fast

I'll try and find the graph I saw about the drop in usafe since torrent sites were banned. I know VM are on the ball with their FUP and are fast in dropping speeds. Sky & BT has an FUP but I have not seen it being used, in fact someone I know used 1TB in a week with Sky and nothing happened to his speed et al and he never even had an email telling him about his usage. As I've said I used to D/L torrents in the morning and never had any problems and they were always fast, In fact I just D/L a file and was getting 6.81MB/s.

The only torrent site that was blocked was the pirate bay, and the pirate party came out before that was even banned. There are still plenty of other torrent sites, that are just as good as if not better that the pirate bay that people can still use. I find it hard to believe that the blocking of the pirate bay has had that much of an impact in the amount of illegal downloading.

As for bandwidth throttling, well on their 100 Mb package VM throttle you once you have downloaded 20 GB in a 2 hour period. They throttle your bandwidth to 50 Mb, for a 4 or 5 hour period before restoring your bandwidth. I am unsure about the other providers but I do believe that they do throttle your bandwidth.

Big Tom,
Over the pond it look's like only 1 isp has started trials on docsis 3.0 and so there's not much information about yet. I can see from a speed table on this that it can deliver a high speed.

if he price is not too much, I'd say give it a try. My home network is a lot more consistent now, I love it.

I will post mine but mine differs depending on my MAC , here is my set up ...

Motorola SB5100 SURFboard cable modem , running "Haxoware Firmware" This allows me to change , clone my MAC address.

Two weeks ago my modem went down (MAC address went off) prior to this id had it locked on a "cmreg20meg" MAC (20 meg connection) for nearly 3 years.

At this moment in time my MAC is i think only 5 or 10 meg its ok runs well but im scanning for MAC's trying to get a big one again , lets see how it is ....

I'm still amazed by some of the low speeds around the world. The Welsh Assembly last week signed a £425million contract with BT to supply Superfast BB of 100Mb for 96% of Wales by 2014, we'll see. The Infrastructure held up here last night, had 4 live streams going and no buffering at all and great picture quality.
