So, as you guys know, I have a Blu-Ray player in my comp. I wanted to wait to get a 5.1 before playing a movie. Finally, I did before getting that.

So, I rented Narnia Chronicles : Caspian Prince in blu-ray format with in head that I had a HD decoding GPU, a strong dual core CPU and a 24" screen. Also, I discovered an OEM CyberLink BD Solution CD on my sofa (sitting there since I have my BD Drive). So, I installed it and installed the patch they proposed me. The movie starts, select my language, then ERROR!

"Your hardware doesn't support HDCP!"

WTF is that. After a little search, it means "High-Definition Content Protection". According to CyberLink, you need a HDMI cable with a graphic card and a monitor that are compatible. WTF!!! I just want to watch a movie! Not buy new hardware!

For a second, I thought I had to go and play it on my dad 42" and PS3. But I searched a little more to see that, I would need help of the God of CD/DVD/HDDVD/BD : AnyDVD HD.

Of course, upon installing and you the rest, I've been able to play the movie (and it was pretty good ;) ).

Look in what we are going in this world with all those protection. We need super expensive hardware, on top of all, to pay for a software to play BDs AND buy another software that removes the HDCP protection.

I want to say : All Hail To Pirates that removes those protection! Seriously.

---For those that wants info on the minimum to play HD movies on PC---

Minimum :
Intel : Pentium 4 3.2GHz
AMD : Athlon X2 3800+ 2GHz
nVidia : GeForce 7600GT (needs strong CPU)

ATI : X1600 series (need strong CPU)

512MB (XP), 1GB (Vista/7) RAM

BD reader

CyberLink HD BD Solution software
AnyDVD HD Software

Recommanded :

Intel : Core 2 Duo CPU
AMD : Athlon 64 FX FX-60 2.6 GHz

nVidia : 8400 with HDMI
ATi : X2400 HD with HDMI

XP/Vista/Seven : 1GB RAM

BD reader/burner

HDMI capable monitor and Graphic card

Any BD-reading software.

---END Of Help---

Although my config being very sufficient to play any HD content, it fails HDCP wise. Pure faggotery. Money and always money. Why DO WE NEED TO ALWAYS HAVE THE BEST OF THE BEST TO PLAY SINGLE ******* MOVIE???

Discuss.

P.S : If this belong to the Off-Topic, then, move it there, I didin't know where to start this.

am familiar with the program you mention. I agree. I cant believe how many hoops one has to jump thru nowadays at times to do such simple things as wathcing a BD/HD. I've yet to get off the monitor and hookup to the biggy just yet. Tho i will be doing so with dvi2hdmi cable. I wonder if any headaches will come from this.

One other thing that caught my eye. That is the minimum of the x1600 for ati while for nvidia its the 7600. I thought just by the naked eye comparison that the x1600 (which i have) seems to be a weaker card when compared to. I put my 6800gt above the x1600 imo. Anyways. thanks for the future heads up.

Ever tried playing a game with StarForce or any of the other draconian DRMs?

Well, no... but I haven't heard of this protection in a while...

OK. Forgot about telling something.

If I would follow the rules by having HDCP on my computer, I would need

- To buy a new GPU with an HDMI ouput. 450-600$
- Since the GPU is PCIe 16x 2.0 and I want to take all advantage of it, I need a new motherboard (yes, mine is a 16x 1.0)!! 250-300$
- Then, my 24" ViewSonic monitor only has DVI input, so I have to throw it out the window for another 24" that has an HDMI input. 500$

Yes, another 1250$ into a computer that is getting old.

Next time, I'll be sure to get a GPU that has HDMI and supports HDCP AND a monitor that has HDMI also...

This is EXACTLY the reason why the small nova, "The Bay" and others still exist.

If you've paid for the movie why shouldn't you be able to watch it WHERE AND WHEN you want.

Although I hate lawyers an interesting court case might be made out of this -- since you can't USE the movie it's not "Fit for purpose" and therefore you should be entitled

a) to your money back
b) Compensation as you have been "mis-sold" goods.

I've found in any case a decent "Upsampling / upscaling" dvd system is nearly as good as blu ray anyway and until this stupid DRM B/S is removed the well known places are a good source of "playable" content.

Eventally in any case VLC will be able to handle Blu Ray stuff.

Cheers
jimbo

Sorry for bumping this. But today, I've definetely drawn a cross on Blu-Ray discs.

So, I've rent the new movie "12 Rounds". Seem good enough from the description (it was good don't worry).

So, I said to myself "The first one worked with AnyDVD HD for Narnia. So it should work for this". Arrived at home, installed CyberLink's software on Vista and AnyDVD. Wrong version of anyDVD so it didn't work. Installed a HD version and surprise : "anyDVD needs to download an update to decrypt that movie".

So, what you say?

Well, if I'm under trial "You can't download coz you are not registered".
And, if I'm cracked "You can't download coz you're cracked".

So, I can't play the movie coz I don't have any HDCP-bull**** thingy. FYI, AnyDVD HD costs 70 euros BY YEAR. That means around 85$ CAD. Like I have this money for A SINGLE F****** BLU-RAY. I'm watching a movie like... once or twice every one or two months.

Now, what's the purpose of my 24" display and blu-ray player?

Money in the fire in the end, you are still spending on either hardware or software.

P.S Went to watch on my bro's PS3.

Hey I feel your pain...The entire market seems to scheme together to make sure you have a "laundry list" of specfic hardware that will cost out your ass for...I really think that a lawyer should look at how DRM and harware are starting to adjust for each other...there must be a law against that!

You think that's abd wait until Sony et al bring out the BD 2.0 spec (or whatever it is), and all those with older BD players that can't take a firmware update to be able to play them.

I've definetely drawn a cross on Blu-Ray discs.

Probably why I don't have, and most likely never will have anything Blueray in my house.
