Where to start :( Multiple problems

FoxConn A6VMX
CPU - AMD 64 x2 DC 2.6 GHz
Graphics - ATI Radeon
Memory - 4 Gb Kingston 2 x DDR2
Soundcard - Realtek onboard or Soundblaster Audigy
3 x Sata Drives

Long story. Basically all started when I upgraded the memory from its previous 2 Gb to the current 4. First thing that happened was the screen froze the odd time - fair enough I thought, maybe just some teething problems, but then I got the 1st BSOD which happened to be a Driver IRQ not less or equal etc so then I figured, ok, so I've a driver conflict somewhere. SO I went through all my drivers and updated all of those that needed to be, and hoped that might sort things out, but not to be.

At this point, I was barely managing to spend 15-20 mins in Win 7 & sometimes a lot less before it froze usually in the middle of an audio application. So I suspected perhaps my ancient soundcard was the offending culprit & so have upgraded it to a Soundblaster Audigy SE. But firstly I couldn't get Win 7 to let me install it fully - crashed 2/3 of the way through the process with a BSOD-131 after which it wouldn't let me into Windows at all. I was able to get in through Safe Mode so disabled the soundcard which meant at least I could get into Win 7 long enough to fire up the relevant tests for output to provide here (& hoping they show up ok).

BUT even with the soundcard disabled, I'm still back to having constant freezes without a BSOD. The minidumps related to prior to the new soundcard installation as the BSOD 131 didn't provoke a dump for some reason.

I've a dual boot system so am working in XP thankfully or I'd get nothing done at all, but am keen to get to the bottom of this as I really want to get the use of my new extra memory.

On another note entirely - if at all possible, I'd also prefer to not have to consider returning to the old C-Media soundcard for any reason, only because I'm disabled with multiple pain issues but also have severe hand arthritis which makes working inside the case painful and something I try to organise to only have to do rarely where possible as I've no help.

Start off by uninstalling BitDefender. It was the cause of one of your crashes.
Article 333 - How to uninstall BitDefender

Next, uninstall Acronis DiskDirector. It was the cause of another one of your BSOD.

I was working this at the same time as mgorman87 - please follow his advice prior to mine.

Perfmon shows many, many issues with the dynamic updates for Microsoft Security Essentials. This is either (IMO) a corruption of the MSSE or a virus infection. Please try a couple of these free scans to rule out the virus': Free Online AntiMalware Scanners (read the details at the link)

If the system comes up clean (and only if it comes up clean) - please uninstall MSSE, then go into Device Manager and remove (uninstall) all devices that start with "MpKsl". Then reboot the system and download/install a fresh copy of MSSE.

Dear gosh - would it not be simpler to just reinstall Windows LOL? I think it's just because it's getting late and I'm struggling with my pain issues - that lot is just overwhelming me at the moment - just looks like almost everything is wrong with this system despite many of the very programs I rely on to keep it running right incl MSE, Acronis etc. But I've no objection in the least to removing & reinstalling etc, and will just have to take my time to work through it all and hopefully manage to achieve a much better output by next week with a bit of luck. I only have about 2 hours a day perhaps to put into the PC depending how I am, but enjoy a challenge so will relish all of this once I get started on it . SO grateful I have a dual boot system or it would be another matter entirely! Thanks again to you both.

Short update - still (slowly!) working my way through things, but even with having only uninstalled BitDefender & running antivirus scans (which did pick up a couple of trojans which I thought should have been already dealt with on prior scans after a known hit but anyway - hopefully defo dealt with this time), the system is already appearing somewhat more stable. However, I know that could be a false front and so am continuing on with the rest of the tests - doing the Memory one overnight and then the CPU stress on Sat morning all being well as I'm just a bit concerned about the poss high temps warning given I've little understanding or knowledge of what would constitute a high temp anyway, so want to be around to keep a close eye on things. But even to have it at the point where I can at least spend more than 15-30 mins working without a crash is wonderful - lets me get a bit more work done at least. Catch you again over the weekend.

HAH - 2 mins after I posted this, it was off again - no BSOD just a screen freeze but confirming obviously long way yet to go - still every minute longer without a problem is an improvement, so very happy!

First, only use 1 antivirus at a time - more than that can cause problems with your system.
As for the freezing, that's not uncommon - but we'll have to wait until you've finished everything before we try to work with it.

Just a quick query on the Prime95 Test - where would I find info on the safest highest temp I can allow the test to run to?? My normal CPU temps average around 30-35. I've had a look on some of the AMD forums but they scare the life out of me as most on there seem to be highly knowledgeable people and mostly into gaming - don't mind making a fool of myself but within reason LOL! This is the only test that concerns me to any degree - don't want to fry my processor unnecessarily although appreciate you'd not be asking me to run the test without good reason, so willing to give it a go on the premise it's at my own risk too. And on all those drivers - I'm unsure whether it's because I've now uninstalled a lot of the software or whatever, but I can't find most of them in Windows/System (unless they'd be anywhere else on my PC which is always possible given the multitude of backups I have strewn all over my Backup partition), - the only bogey is that darned Bit Defender - sheesh but it doesn't have like to hook itself in deep eh? I've uninstalled it, gone through the Registry deleting every obvious sign of it, but it's still not gone as evidenced by the boot error that it can't load because it can't find certain DLLs. I've seriously worked through every likely hiding place for it (startup/programs/etc) and tried searching both on bd**** ,BitDefender & Bit Defender etc, but can't find where it's sitting - any other possible prefixes - DLL it's looking for is txmlutil.DLL if that's any help? All being well, will set up the Prime test tomorrow afternoon when I'm here to keep an eye on it.

65 to 70ºC are the max that a processor should generally run. You can get away with higher temps - but it still indicates that there's a problem with the cooling that you use. So you'd need to fix the cooling if it runs hotter.

Most drivers are in C:\Windows\System32\drivers - but there's no need to go there - just update the programs associated with the drivers and that will update the drivers.

Thanks John - I'd not be surprised if my cooling isn't the best as I had to get CCL to do the work for me in putting the chip onto the board when I bought it and they didn't ask if I wanted to buy a dearer cooler so suspect it's most likely a "bog standard" one but we'll see how it goes tomorrow.

On BD - had uninstalled it yesterday using that info already, but for some reason it didn't show up anywhere in any of the programs (Glary Utils/Windows Add/Remove etc) I use for uninstalling so I initially did the uninstal using that program and then went through and deleted what was left in the folder. Then ran Glary's Registry cleaner both before and after a reboot before going through the Registry but still it lingers somewhere. Will try again tonight tho and rerun the program in case it manages to find something it missed in the first pass. I've not yet bothered to reinstall Acronis and am running another spyware scan tonight to let you see what's what first before I do anything with MSE. Catch you tomorrow at some stage with an update on how all the other tests have run

I've pretty much worked my way through all those tests now bar the Prime one - ran it for an hour but temps were peaking up to 80 and over at points just on the small FFTs, and to be honest, it scares me too much to consider running it for hours on end, or to rack up the pressure another notch on the large ones. My difficulty with the processor too is that I've no ability personally to cope with changing the heatsink & don't have anyone that could do it for me either, & my only other would be the more expensive one of having to invest in a new MB with processor/heatsink already in place as I did before but I've no funds to go down that route either at the moment. I'm hoping we've not fully exhausted all the other possible causes though before I maybe do have to consider that option ultimately?

On the MSSE - unsure what way to go forward with it - all the spyware/virus tests etc have picked up spyware in abundance but no trojans or viruses as such, so should I still go ahead with reinstalling it etc as you've outlined, or do you want me to run more reports on the current status first to see what's changed?

And again, the only drivers I've not updated are those that were listed as being Windows Update because I wasn't sure whether I needed to do those ones or not? (Oh so easily confused LOL!)

Truly hoping we're getting close to a fix on this that isn't going to involve me having to spend more money or rack back to my prior RAM setup.

One more point of interest - it may be most likely to be only a Win 7 issue this, as I can use XP for hours without any problems now - 6 hours today without one hint of a freeze, whereas I managed a paltry 25 minutes in Win 7 earlier today, prior to the point where I ran the Prime test where I did get over an hour or so. Currently working with the Driver Verifier so will update you on that one tomorrow.

If the system is overheating on Prime95 - then the cooling has to be fixed (in order to run Prime95).

Uninstall/reinstall MSSE.

Update the drivers - in particular the one from 2002 for your audio. A 2002 driver on a Win7 system is just asking for trouble.

I've dealt with most of the drivers I think - long uninstalled the 2002 one which related to my old soundcard now happily updated to a nice new one, but as I said, sorting out the cooling is going to be a much longer term process as I've no idea if/when I could ever afford to go down the route of investing in another mobo - for me, it's the only way of getting it done. As I mentioned, I've no physical capability of undertaking the fiddly route of working with a processor - or at least I'm assuming it would be beyond my hand arthritis to do so, and I'd be hugely nervous of killing the darned thing anyway, so simpler to get it done at the point of purchase, but that will be a long time ahead I doubt .

But as I don't want my PC to go up in smoke some night when I leave it on all night torrenting or whatever, I can see it's another thing I'm just going to have to invest in at some point.

So, - aside from that - if I've deleted/updated all the drivers, removed all the trojans/spyware etc, & done everything else on your list, and yet STILL having issues, is the cooling the only thing left in your opinion I need to fix before we can reassess the situation?

Check the "Created" dates of the drivers in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder. That'll give you an idea if you've gotten the older ones.

As for the processor cooling, try opening the side of the case and pointing a house fan in there. Then run Prime95 and see if it helps the temps.

Thanks John - happily my brother has allayed my fears on updating my processor fan - I thought it would mean fiddling around with the heatsink/thermal paste & all that malarky - so as he's educated me on it being a simple fan replacement - that I can and probably will do as no doubt it would be a wise move regardless. However, if I can organise my home fan (large cumbersome beastie - floor standing so not easy for me to manoeuvre) I'll try that in the meantime . And will do on the driver check too. Tks again.

Sometimes if the heatsink fan doesn't help keep the CPU cool then you might need to reapply some artic silver thermal paste on the cpu.

Can I change the fan alone initially though just to see or is that likely to be a bit pointless if the heatsink is the issue? Sorry - you can tell I've minimal experience in this area - despite having built a few PCs before I've always had to leave anything related to the processor to others for various reasons so haven't really gotten to grips with what's what in them. Vaguely remember on my old PC seeing the levers for the heatsink and trying to remove it one day in order to clean the fan!!! Thankfully I'd no hand strength to let me do it anyway, but once I realised what I'd done I worried for days afterwards whether I'd caused any probs - thankfully it appeared not but I was quite glad nonetheless when I finally upgraded to this.

Yes. You can change the fan. If after replacing the fan and making sure the heatsink is free of dustballs and your CPU continues to get hot then you might need to apply some thermal compound

Just a quick update on this problem - have had to accept the memory itself is the problem. COmpany I bought it from ran tests on it themselves & stated 1 stick failed, so they kindly replaced both FOC, but once again, the minute I put them in, I had the same problems in Win 7 of total freezes. So I'm now going to wait and save up to buy Crucial sticks which might at least be closer to what's already onboard & working well. Buys me a little more time on getting other things sorted too. Course, I might well just upgrade the mobo with 4Gb onboard and be done with it - probably work out cheaper in the long run perhaps. Now, any buyers for a couple of cheap Kingston 2 Gb sticks LOL!
