Who's sticking with Windows 7?

Yep good article and Jack made some nice questions :)
The terms of use and privacy terms need a careful read which I haven't had the time to cull through them all
But a quote was posted that seems to be from Onedrive terms but may apply to the entire os
Which is disturbing if it does

I would expect Onedrive content to be culled through for violations.... but content in the os I would hope it was completely separate and completely private this needs to be confirmed

Just the system requirements of a M$ account from a Newegg sells listing kind of insinuates local accounts are gone even if you pay 140.us for it :/
That's another issue that needs to be verified because I do not and will not use a M$ account for an os.
My terms which are granted in win-7
Everyone likes new stuff.

sorry for a naive ? , reading thru these posts i believe i would probably wait till 2020 also for W 10.... but i am wondering about updates (automatic) for W7. Should most people just let them all install ? or read / search what each is for ? I think after some recent update i am having Bing terrorizing me again with pop ups i have never seen before.

I recommend setting Updates to Automatic.

The fear of Windows 10 does not warrant hiding those Updates unless you are paranoid. There are no performance problems traced to these.

As to Bing it is one I suggest avoiding. You can find it in Installed Updates and Control Panel/Programs to Uninstall. Then right click to Hide when it queues again under Optional.

In Browser Add-Ons under Search set Google for best search default, remove others and tick box to avoid any returning.

Only hidden ones here are Silverlight, Skype, and language packs.

I have a new Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series that came with Win 8.1 installed , and now upgraded to Win 10. I also have newly purchased OEM version of Win 7 home that I wish to dual boot with Win 10. Is there anything special I need to do to make that happen? I want to keep using Win 7 for the for the time being, but also I want to practice with Win 10.

My 2-1/2 y/o Shuttle desktop and my Thinkpad T450s from work will stay on Windows 7 for forever.

I installed 10 over 8.1 on my Yoga 2 Pro.

We've got four other computers in the house - one is 7, the others are 8.x. Keeping 7 and upgrading one of the others to 10. The other two, a Pentium 4 and a Celeron, may or may not meet system reqs, but I won't bother.

I had Windows 10 on my machines and am in the process of going back to Windows 7. Windows 10 is okay, but I have an NVidia card and things just get a little wonky with it.

Like others, I will probably install this near the end of the 12 month offer. It will take the hardware vendors that long to stabilize their drivers, never mind the Microsoft patches. It will also probably take that long before I see any upgrades to any of the applications I use that will make moving to Windows 10 worth it.

I will say, unlike Windows 8.x I have no ill feelings towards this OS, and was even involved in the Insider program. It is more about getting day to day work done on my machine and keeping it stable. Being on the leading edge of anything is going to lead to unwanted problems you can avoid with just a little patience.

I won't be moving to 10 right now, perhaps not at all. I have a 5 GB cap on a 1 to 3 mbps connection and it would pretty much eat up my allotment for a month just for the upgrade on one and another month for the second one. I'm not seeing anything in Win 10 that I need.

My main reason though is the no choice update policy. I install critical updates right away but delay the others for two reasons. The main one being the cap. I want to chose when the updates are downloaded not when MS says I have to take them. Updates could very easily put me over my cap and cost me a lot of money ($0.45 per MB). The second reason is the update could be a bad one and then I'm stuck with a brick and possibly both systems could become bricks. As it is I update one at a time reserving the other to look up why the updated computer has issues.

The third, I don't know how MS intends to deal with HP systems which could be an issue. MS has recommended updates to my system which, had I done them, would have crashed it.

The fourth, things on Win 10 seems to be pointing to the cloud and thus a need of a high speed connection to be of use. At the moment that is not in my future.

That is pretty much the case for me except that my bandwidth cap is thankfully higher (even though yours is 2 Gb higher than my cousin's cap). Also in the past (one of my posts on these forums in fact) have been about bad updates that screwed up my computer temporarily. Has happened 3 times in the last 10 years. Also I don't know exactly how the updates work when you are in the middle of working on something. I would not want a forced reboot when I am in the middle of working on a project. Especially when my computer is old and not the best and sometimes crashes. Last month I was over my bandwidth from downloading a game and had to pay $50 Cdn. I am unemployed and on Provincial Disability which does not give as much as Federal so I still haven't paid that. Also everything on my computer is compatible with Windows 7 (When I went from Xp to 7 I had to update 2 things which my ex-fiance helped me with financially) and I own this Windows 7 license. I also cracks for old software that I want to run without needing the CD in all the time but from the hard drive for speed and Windows 10 would uninstall any programs cracked I heard even if not related to Microsoft. Also I don't like the loss of privacy since I do a lot of security stuff (Anti-spam and anti-scam stuff) as a hobby. I also love customizing my computer the way I want it to be .. not the way that Microsoft insists it to be. It was what intrigued me back in Windows 95 when I used to make my own start up window animations (I miss those lol). Another reason is with Microsoft's track record I tend to not trust why they want to give 10 for free unless they want people to go to it for a reason to their own benefit rather than ours. I would rather wait and see if there are any issues and bugs before jumping into an operating system that forces updates on me when they want rather than when I want.

Also I don't want to have to have a Microsoft account which is required for some features.

Staying with 7 for now. Don't quite trust the whole Windows 10 thing yet, want to see how it develops. Plus my CAD vendors don't recommend running Windows 10, things aren't 100% stable there yet. Same goes for 3D printing.

I am a reporter doing a story on people who've decided to stick with Windows 7 and not go for the Windows 10 free upgrade. If that's you, and you'd like to talk to me about it, hit me up on email at [EMAIL REMOVED] or just respond to this thread.

Are you Ian? pcworld.com/article/2952888/windows/windows-7-holdouts-why-diehard-users-refuse-to-move-to-windows-10.html

Nice article. Thanks for the write up :)

Yep it is a nice write up

The way clean installs have been going lately with windows updates stalling all over the place just checking for update I'm wondering if M$ is hampering with servers for win-7 receiving them,

It's just happening way too often to be an anomaly in time of day... server overload.....:/

The wifi sharing stuff is not all that much of an issue I've read
These people would still need the password
Besides as stated it's among contacts/ friends... so :/

Most of the issues I have are with a) a M$ account might be mandatory as well as uefi bios
Not to mention this
default.aspx
If the above did not apply to local accounts I'd say I was one huge step forward in paying for it.

It's an easy thing to turn Wi Fi sharing off and you don't need a UEFI Bios.

At one time the system requirements did state uefi bios were required in 10tp
Reading this it states on the right column for secure boot it does
Windows 10 Specifications - Microsoft
I'm pretty sure can't swear secure boot is enabled on an install as well as fast start.....
