Who's sticking with Windows 7?

Hi,
Win-10 is so sensitive imagining does work fine but the ultimate problem is connecting to the internet with win-10,

My start menu works fine off line but as soon as I connect to the internet recent programs and files disappear so there is an update that is messing it up
After it messes it up even disconnecting from the internet does not solve anything.

Best cure I've found is I do not use win-10 I'm sick of resetting it.
Maybe in 2020 it might work for longer than a month before stuff stops recent programs is pretty basic feature :)

I've been running Win 10 since the very first preview and have never had the issues you are describing Thrash. I don't find Win 10 unstable in the least.

Even though I run Win 10 on several machines and like it fine, I still have no intention of upgrading my desktop (running Win 7 Ult) to Win 10 as I don't feel there will be anything gained by doing so.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
i just bought a laptop last week came pre installed with windows 10, i must say i have had no issues what so ever with it, all programs work, i did remove store and all its apps, and other stuff... runs ok, but i will say mine is a gaming laptop so not sure if that makes a difference.. but i am going to downgrade to 7 if i can , i am going to partion my 2nd drive and see if it will find all drivers... if not then i will stick with 10... i just like 7 better as some features and option i liked in 7 are not in 10..

I would stick to Windows 10. I understand all of your complaints but Windows 10 is still very young and you should expect incompatibilities with the hardware of your system. I have no problem with Microsoft stalking on my PC in a weird way because I live in the Philippines where M$ doesn't give a ****. Give it some time, most of you would want to go to Windows 10 soon.

You could say that about almost any past OS. Remove Win 10 from you statement and insert Win ME. Your statement would not be true then. There is no certainty that Win 10 will be better. There is only Hope.

Just a question here. If I purchase a new PC with Win 10, can I just restore an image of Win 7 from my old PC and be good to go or is there something in Win 10 that stops that?

Is the Win 7 on your old PC a retail license?

Ignoring the licensing issue (if any), it will likely "work" in the sense that it will probably boot.

You may have some bangs in Device Manager and a screwy looking desktop. Given a few hours, you should be able to fix most or all of that.

I'd certainly download Windows 7 drivers for your Ethernnet (NIC), monitor, sound card, etc.

Even after all of that, you may not be "good to go", depending on the licensing issue. If you've got a Win 7 retail license, you should be fine, although you may have some hair-pulling to do. If you don't have a Win 7 retail license, I'd expect you'll have to deal with Microsoft either over the phone or online in order to activate--and from what I've heard in the last couple of years, your success in doing that is unpredictable.

I haven't heard of anything in a Win 10 install that would interfere with a Win 7 image restoration.

Then there's the question of how easy it would be to go back to 10 after you had used 7 for a while. Lots of variables.

If you buy a new PC, you may be faced with unfamiliar UEFI/GPT issues and a bunch of menu choices you've never seen before--particularly if you do a re-install.

I'm contemplating a clean install of 10, but I don't want to over-write a known good 7 Retail install---so that would mean I'd have to buy a new SSD for 10. Not sure I'll do that. I don't fully trust the Win 10 "roll back" feature or imaging.

sticking with Windows 7 until MS comes ou with the 1st service pack.

i am an admin for over 400 windows computers, no need to update now.

typically businesses wait until the last minute to update. too many different variables to just decide to update one day. the update process takes months to plan and execute.

I think the plan is that there will not be any traditional Service Packs for Windows 10 but a rolling development program with regular "small" updates.

Of course we have already had one "small" update last September/October and await another This July with the Anniversary edition both of which contained enough changes new features to be classed as an old style Service pack

I fully understand the constraints of business computing as I've been involved in upgrades in companies where there are Thousands of seats involved - hopefully the rolling update system will reduce the major trauma of system upgrades ;)

Here is an anecdotal sample of one. I went to hire a blu ray today. The store computers "went down" because of a recent Windows 10 auto update. I'm guessing it may have been a database software compatibility issue with the update. They are trying to go back to Windows 7. From a small business point of view I'm sure they couldn't care less about the OS but they would care about losing money.

I've tried, or run, every OS from MS since DOS 2.0 and I've just recently given up on the so called Latest & Greatest and I've gone back to Windows 7 Ultimate/32, SP-1, because of its User Friendly GUI and its backward compatibility with older software that I want to continue to use. And, it does not have the HUGE security holes, as does Win-10.

Per an article that I received recently in my email, I have downloaded Windows 7 Ultimate, SP1 from MS.
The only drawback is the huge list of MS Updates that I have to get to bring it fully up to date.
On my latest install, I've received 219 updates. That takes an awful long time!
But the effort is not without its benefits.

Yes, I'll stay with Windows 7.

Cheers Mates!

My main machine was behaving a little flaky. It has had windows 10 on it for a short time as a test and was re imaged with 7. Anyhow it stopped seeing USB drives, files would disappear (no icons just the names) and other strange things. So I decided to blow it away and re install 7 64 bit Ultimate. Installation took no time at all of the basic OS, then the drivers, programs and so on and on. Then I decided to activate my Genuine Retail Copy of Ultimate and I got an error back from the activation server that stated the key can no longer be used to activate Windows. Boy that is an underhand tactic. If you get that message don't give up phone them and activate over the phone. M$ is trying every dirty trick in the book. Just a few more programs to install then I can image the partition with Macrium Reflect.

I am sticking to Windows 7

I did the infamous Windows 10 update. It looks good and the performance is good also. It saved freed up some space on my small SSD drive.

Thank goodness I had an Acronis image of my Asus laptop because the first thing that went south was my dvd drive, after that Wi-Fi kept getting a red X on it. To fix Wi-Fi I had to constantly do troubleshooting. Some other drivers where not available also. I don't remember which. Asus did not have a good selection of Windows 10 drivers for my laptop that is 5 years old.

After I joined Cortana, I lost all access to anything in My Documents, I couldn't save or open any of my documents. When I backed up my data I forgot to backup my pst and lost some info.

I read all I could about undoing Cortana and it seems like you can't. I gave up on this and went back to Windows 7.

One day it asked me reboot, thank goodness I looked closely. Microsoft had already downloaded Windows 10 without me agreeing to it and was about to install it when I did the shut down or restart.

The never10 utility got rid of the constant nagging and also deleted the installation files. https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

I don't plan to update to Windows 10 unless nothing I do will work with Windows 7. And at that time I will do a fresh install.

Tony lets hope that the Microsoft Server was just a little slow on releasing your Windows 7 key from the W-10 Upgrade so you can use it again with Windows 7.

Did you have the W-10 Upgrade using your Windows 7 key longer than 30 days? Hopefully not.

Jack,
No 10 was on there in July last year for about three days. I replaced a Toshiba 256 gb SSD with a Samsung 850 Pro recently and thought with all the copy this to that etc it was time for a new install. :geek:
