Why are my hard drives write protected

Hi, everybody i have aproblem with windows 7 ultimate X64, at first everything worked fine but now when i boot up some of my hard drives ( not all ) are write protected and i can only remove the write protection with diskpart.When i boot up again the drives are write protected again,it is very frustrating anybody have a cure for this, as i said it was running perfectly at first.

Try Taking ownership of your full HD or try reinstalling windows or try disk check

I am logged on as Adminstator and i have ownership of the hhd`s ,i was hoping not to have to reinstall windows,its just funny that not all of my hdd`s are write protected ,i have reformmated them but the still get write protected.

Can you post back with details of the NTFS permissions on the root of the affected drives - need to know what rights, groups /individual users have, also do you have any unknown users with rights to the drive, and if the ownership is held my a user or group and which one

No need for info that may compromise any security

I dont have full permission all the others are checked apart from the last entry as i have a german version not sure what the last one is called in english.i dont have any other accounts/users i am logged on as administrator.

What I would expect to see is for the Administrators group To have full control permissions

If you wish to access the drive without any UAC prompts (assuming it's on) you will also need to give your actual user Full Control Rights to either specific folders/areas on the drive or the whole drive (this is due to the dual token security that applies on Win7)

Applying the rights to the root level should in theory cascade down the folder tree to supply these rights to all areas.

However this is not always the case, so you may see some errors - if these are for obvious system areas ( recycle bin etc) then you can simply OK and ignore - if you have issues with normal folders you may have to apply permissions at lower levels .

As this possible non cascade of permissions applies to ownership too, you may have to also manually take ownership.

There is also an option in advanced permissions to replace on sub containers with the rights of the current location - this can be useful as it allows you to set the permissions you want once and then duplicate these across the complete sub tree

This will normally only have to be done once and is often caused on external drives as when we upgrade the OS or multi-boot the NTFS permissions for the old OS or Other OS are also on the folders and files

I have had similar experience and found that due to having a large media library in the hard disk in question, my issue was not what i previously thought.

The Windows media player was set to re-organize and or rename files according to my Rip disk settings; This acts like a write protect function if any write-protected media is present. and crazy as it sounds that will cause you to get the "Remove Write Protection" error telling you that disk or volume is write protected.

what i found to fix this was to remove the settings in media player allowing it to re-organize and rename files, after which i went to the tools/advanced/restore media library and allowed it to dump my current library and reset it.

after doing that it is often accessible, if not then try a reboot to clear the settings, or use the DISKPART functions to clear the write protection.

I giggled to myself when i started doing google searches and found soooo many old posts that were also in vista forums about the same kind of thing, that were probably the same fix.

I would be interested to know how many find this to fix the issue for them btw

Win7 Hard Drives are starting to write protect

Hey I have seen some other posts about this but for some reason just recently my Hard drives are starting to write protect themselves, for instances you go to properties and select chkdsk and it fixes the issues but then once you reboot it write protects the drives again, I have had this 1.5TB external drive for 2 years now and never had a problem until last week.. It's strange that it is doing this, also to go along with this, fire fox is acting strange. The open next tab does not work anymore unless you right hand click on an image and have it open in a new tab that works but nothing else works. So any suggestions? Thanks in advance...
