Why do my desktop icons re-arrange themselves ?

Hello,
I have a Toshiba laptop and use a separate monitor for photo editing because of the better quality detail.
However, when I connect the additional monitor to the laptop my well organised icons find themselves a new home on the desktop of both screens.
I understand that the reason for this is the different screen definition of the monitor but the icons do not return to the original location on the laptop when the additional monitor is disconnected. Is there a way to "lock" these icons to retain the original arrangement ?
Any "non teckie" idea's to resolve this would be appreciated.

Desktop icons can be a pain. You can avoid the problem if you organize your icons in taskbars. That's a lot more convenient and flexible.

I use a program called DesktopOK to remember and restore Desktop icon positions.

When you right click your desktop and scroll to View is your "Auto Arrange Icons" ticked if it is then untick it and see if that helps
