Okay, have finally finished my exams and started work on my antenna, I built a very basic thing to start with for testing but it is along the lines of this: How to build a weatherproof compact high gain WiFi antenna - YouTube

The only problem came when wiring it to the wifi card, I stripped the white and black cables that go to the card expecting to find one core like Anak said but there were two in a coaxial style. I just don't really know how to deal with this! I hope you can help! Do I make two of the above antennas, one for each cable?

Yes, there are or were two antennas in your laptop. They are useless now that you have cut the cables in half though.

No, don't worry, they were different cables from an old laptop. They just fit the connections. So basically what I need to do is to just make two of those antennas shown in the vid right? Thanks for your help, I can't tell you how much it is appreciated!

Ok, so basically I make the bottom half to that one right? Then put the white wire to one side and the black wire to the other yes? Thank you very much for the help, much appreciated!

You have your home-brew antenna with a lead coming off it, and it is coax, and you are going to connect it to the card's wiring that has a black, and a white wire

What about the black and white wiring from the card, have you stripped them yet?

If I read this correctly, you have two coax cables, one white and one black. One antenna goes on the white and the other on the black. One antenna goes to the connector the white wire was on and the other antenna to where the black wire was connected. Those wires are coaxial cables, each one has two conductors. A shield on the outside and a center conductor in the center.

Ok, let's start from scratch! I have a mini pci wifi card on my laptop. There are two wires coming of it leading to antennas. There is a White wire (main) and a black wire (aux). Each wire is coaxial style, it has a centre core and an outer thing so there is two connections in each cable. Now, I have to attach this to an external antenna. So would I make the bottom half of the one in the vid? I guess I then put the White cable onto one of the figure of eight look alike things and the black one on the other because they are both coaxial style right? Hope this makes sense!

Alphanumeric posted whilst I was typing! The next question is whether I make two different backplates, one for each cable or whether I do it of one. Surely with one it would muck up the circuit or will it not matter?

I would do one backplate with two of the bowtie (figure 8) antenna's.

Then one of the wires (white or black) are soldered to one of the bowties.

Each bowtie has two soldering points.

One (the copper center conductor) at the solid middle of the bowtie. The other (the braided silver colored sheathing) where the ends meet.

wifi2.JPG

Then you do the other (black or white) the same way.

Thank you very much, that is what I thought! So dimension wise now, would it be 118mm tall and 252mm wide? The centre connectors for the Bowtie things will be halfway up (59mm) and in from the side 66mm right? Thanks for the help!

P.S. @alphanumeric, please could you plus rep anak for me as I can't do it more than once. @Anak, alphanumeric has been helpful too, could you also give him some rep for me :)?
Give me a little while, and I'll have a drawing made up for you.

I'm watching the NFL (American Football) Playoffs, makin' dinner for when the DW comes home from work, and keepin' track of our correspondence.

For the backplate, the 118 sounds right, but it is 260 instead of 252, think 'bout it.....

You need two 66's=132+128=260

Ohh....'bout your p.s. that is a no no. Begging for rep can at the very least earn you an admonishment, if not an outright ban from the forums.

Thank you ever so much! That drawing made things clear. 252 was because I read the bottom number as 120 rather than 128 so my mistake! When I get another spair moment, will dig out some materials. Afraid I am busy at the moment as I do have GCSEs coming up and they come first. But when I get time will have a look! Also, for the rep thing, I am very sorry, I didn't realize it would be that bad! Very sorry for that! Thank you very much again!
