Will I lose all of my files with upgrade?

actually norm nothing has happend apart from the nagging...
you can still create and save documents...
and you can install programs
although full screen programs are impossible due to the nagging
i believe you cannot use aero and the goodies that you get...lol

yes you can change any settings you like...
as i did not activate that version of 7
i got the nagging please activate windows...
and at random time please activate windows yada yada...
at random restarts there is a black screen background...
but easily changeable in the control panel...

i will post pics with the happening....
maybe a vid if i have the time....

Well shit...I go through the entire installation of 7 and when it gets to the last step it has an "Unexpected Error" and wont let me complete the installation. Has anyone else had this problem?

as what happens??
if any error codes come up..
if you closed all antivirus and any protection before tried it...

this is an upgrade correct??

Yes I am trying to upgrade and I also tried once more with the same results....

I get to the final step "Completing Upgrade" at 31% then it gives me this message....

"Windows installation encountered an error and cannot continue. Your computer will restart and your previous version of windows will be restored."

So now I am stumped....has anyone else got this message?

I dont believe I have any encrypted files, and I have a total of 27.5 GB of free space, which should be plenty enough. I disabled my anti virus the second attempt to see if that made a difference but that did not seem to make any difference at all.

I believe it is 120 gigs but it tells me i only have 111 gigs available.

then on your user name folder right click then click properties...
how big is that folder???

yeah thats most likely it.....
since you said that it was in the end of the install...(where it moves/copies/replaces files)
and you have less than 50% free space....
and your userprofile is using more than double the free space....

move some files away from your user account to another folder...
and unnistall some programs...
try to make as lean as possible

Thats what i am doing. I am even running CCleaner as we speak. After this I am trying the install one more time and if that doesn't work I am probably giving up, at least till the public beta is out. I will tell you how it works once I go through the installation once more!

Well that took forever, just as the last 2 times did, and once again the same problem at 31% on the last step. I think I'll call it a night and most likely just wait till the public beta. At least it gave me an excuse to clean up a ton of space on my HDD! lol, thx again darkassain!

What would clearing out system restore points do? Would that screw me up if the installation didn't work again and it couldn't restore me back to my previous version of windows with all of my files intact?

Before my last attempt I cleared a large chunk of space on my HDD. I now have a total of 65.35 Gigs of space open, about 58% of my total hard drive free. I would assume this would be an adequate amount of space for the installation to copy everything, so I don't know what the deal is...

No, but it would save you a *lot* of HD space.

Typically, Windows uses about 12% of HD space for System Restores. In your case, that can be as much as 14 GB of space (12% times 120 GB). I would suggest that you manually create a restore point right now http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/697-system-restore-point-create.html , then clear out the old ones (using Disk Cleanup - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/336-system-protection-restore-points-delete.html .

Of course, only do this if your system is running completely stable....
