I many years ago purchased windows vista with a free upgrade to windows 7, and for many years i ran windows 7 no problems, recently my drive got some problems that necessitated a format, i did not check that i still had my product key as i always keep them all (i still have 3.11 win xp and my vista product key) as this copy of windows has already been activated with microsoft and my PC has not changed from the day it was activated will windows still have the key code as i cant now find mine, can i ring them up and get it off them ???
i do not want to purchase yet another copy of 7 as i have already bought it years ago and my pc prob will not run 8.1

The 'free' upgrade that came with new computers when Windows 7 was launched was administered by the manufacturers and not by MS.
The manufacturers are the only people who may (but almost certainly won't) have a record of which Win7 Key they sent out to which user.

The Key would have been on a card enclosed with the installation disk for Windows 7.

Unfortunately, if you've already reformatted the drive there is probably no way to recover the Key from it - especially if you've already reinstalled Windows- without going through a very laborious recovery procedure.

MS keeps no records of which Key is used by a given person - the post-installation 'registration' is a marketing exercise, and kept separately to the activation information - with no links whatever. (The only exceptions to this are the various Volume License Keys).
