I have win7 and several months ago I registered for win10. Since then I've heard nothing. I've been checking for updates all night and just get "Checking for updates" in the windows update dialog box (internet working ok).

I've tried
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 "Upgrade Now"

which downloads GetWindows10-sds_____________.exe

and when I run it (also as admin or with/without antivirus) it does nothing.

I find this a bit odd unless I have something wrong with my notebook. Nothing obvious and virus checked regularly.

I don't want to lose all my apps/data if I can help it but does anyone have any advise?

You can sign up for the Insider program on the Microsoft site and then download the ISO of W10.
Personally, i would seriously consider waiting until the Sprting before installing W-10 unless yoou have a spare hard drive to put into the notebook and do a "clean install". That will be the only way to guarantee that none of the programs and data on your current drive are lost. You will need a copy of all of th drivers as well.
I run a test machine with Windows 10 and have had few issues with it. The install does take time but is usually completed from a "clean install" disc. You will not need a product key if you are an Insider, btw.

Just my 2 cents

if its your Dell inspiron 1570, then Dell are not supporting it for the W10 upgrade.
If you have the GWX logo, bottom right side of taskbar, Right click on it and it will tell you if there is a problem
