Solved WIN 7 anti virus(virus)

I was given a Toshiba netbook NB205-N325BL. It is running Windows 7 Starter. It does not have a CD Drive.

The owner gave me the notebook for a number of reasons. One reason being it has a virus on it called WIN 7 anti virus(virus).

I ran Malwarebytes anti malware program and was able to remove (i think i removed the virus) the virus. But now i have another problem, i cant launch programs. From what i have read about the virus, it changes the registry.

I would prefer to wipe the HD clean and reinstall windows with a recovery disk, but there isnt a CD drive to do that. does anyone have any solutions to this problem i have? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Vegas, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You may be able to download and merge the EXE and lnk (LNK) options in the tutorial below to restore the default associations for the these file types to be able to open them again.

Afterwards, you might consider using something like the free Malwarebytes and ESET Online Scanner to help make sure that you are virus and malware free.

Hi Vegastud,

In addition to the file associations being messed up which Brink's suggestion will fix, there may be more malware lurking.

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

Double click dds.scr to run the tool.

• When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt

Save both reports to your Desktop. Post them back here for review.

page 52 will show you how to restore the computer to it's original factory image without DVDs. That procedure will wipe the drive and reinstall the OS.

i want to report back. i decided to go with the Toshiba manual, wipe the hardrive clean and reinstall the OS. Knock on wood, everything works and all the updates are done. The netbook works awesome! Thank you all.

Now that your computer is back in tip top shape, check out page 59 of the Toshiba manual. It gives instructions for creating a recovery DVD. Not useful if you do not have a USB optical drive, but you should be able to create a bootable thumb drive and make that into recovery media.

Carolyn, would you be able to provide a link on how to put the recovery CD on a USB memory stick. I know how to set up BIOS to make the USB port as the default, I don't know how to put the info onto a thumb drive.

Those tutorials use a DVD installation disk to create the bootable USB flash drive.
