win 7 does not like my DVD drive :(

My LG dvd drive just does not want to work with Windows 7 RC1 (it did work on prevous versions, but they were unstable for me)

It does recognise the drive in my computer and device manager, but it cant read any kind of disks i insert. I have left a disk in for several hours just to see if would eventually read, but never does. that includes disks such dvd, cd, dvd dl +r etc. It does however read completly blank disks that have no content on what so ever.

It is definetly a problem with Win 7 because other OS read the drive fine. Boot up disks also read fine from the bios.

Anybody know a possible solution for this?

You might consider a firmware upgrade for the drive itself. Check the LG Optical Website for updates for your particular drive. As always, when doing firmware upgrades, be sure to carefully read instructions for the process.

OK thanks for that, I did what you suggested and upgraded to the latest firmware, unfortunately though, i'm still getting the same issue.

That's really odd. Symptoms point to a potentially faulty drive but you mentioned that it boots ok. So you already deleted the device and let Win re-install it. Do you have any other flags in your device manager?

its telling me everything is ok in device manager.

And yeah, the drive worked fine in XP & Vista and in bios

so this is really stange.

I'm having this same problem. Windows 7 recognizes the drive but will not spin anything I put into it up.

The drive model is:
LG GH22NS30 Super Multi - DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM drive - Serial ATA - 48x (CD) / 16x (DVD) 48x (CD) / 20x (DVD±R) / 12x (DVD-R DL) / 16x (DVD+R DL) 32x (CD) / 6x (DVD-RW) / 8x (DVD+RW) / 12x (DVD-RAM) - Internal - Black

Here's a footnote play-by-play of the issue and what I have done:

-- Drive is recognized by Windows 7 (can be seen in Explorer and Device Manager)
-- Drive will recognize discs in Explorer, but will not advance any playback of a disc past that point
-- I have tried removing the Upper and LowerFilters in the registry; NEITHER value existed when I searched for them
-- I have uninstalled the drive, both physically and via device manager

At this point, it has been a month since I've installed 7 and ran it without an optical drive. As you can imagine, it's getting frustrating to the point where I need to get it fixed or revert back. Please, if anyone has anything that can help, that I haven't already tried, I'm open.

I remember, I had this issue with one my Toshiba's laptop back in time with WinXP. The only thing it could read was bought CDs. So, I sent it under warranty to get it changed.

So, either :
1. Try to buy a disc that 'wash' the lens. The lens has mayby problems.
2. Borrow another drive and plug it up.
3. Buy another CD/DVD drive. LG's CD/DVD drive are really cheap but their lifespan is moderated (but I still love them).

This is going to sound stubborn, but I'm positive that the drive is not broken, and rather, this issue is a conflict within Windows 7 and/or the PnP drivers.

For starters, I purchased this drive from Tiger (from their Aurora, IL warehouse, NOT mail ordered) as an OEM. I learned that the previous drive was dead when I originally attempted to load 7 from the get go. Therefore, the drive is only a month old (as old as my 7 install).

The drive is recognized in every stage of BIOS, and will even prompt me to load from a CD/DVD prior to booting into the HD (Boot1 = CD/DVD, Boot2 = HD). However, it's once it is in Windows 7 where the problem exists.

I will attempt to clean the drive, I have a disc cleaner around the house somewhere. I'll let you know.

Well, my problem is of similar kind. i just bought a new laptop [dell inspiron 1545]. it had vista preinstalled on it. the dvd-rom was working fine on it. then i installed windows 7. but after installation the drive is not shown in the explorer. when i press the eject button the drive icon appears. when i insert the drive back,drive icon remains for few second and then disappears again.
then i roll back to vista. the drive is working fine while booting.

Anybody found a solution to this problem yet that is confirmed to work? Curious thing is that it used to work. Mabe some update caused the error. Restoring to earlier time does not work.

Right now i'm trying to read Khayven's last post to see whether or not he found a solution to the problem but i get stuck trying to open the full post. All my machine does is attempting to open the thread and hanging there. Something wrong with the thread on the forums?

I am now seriously considering going back to Vista.

well, strange as it may sound...I was having similar issues after installing a new motherboard, CPU and RAM over the weekend. I put together an updated HTPC with the Gigabyte GA-E7AUM-DS2H motherboard. Well, spending most of Friday night making everything nice and neat I fired it up. First step...I went into the BIOS to configure the SATA drives to AHCI and disabling stuff I do not need (COM, LPT, Ethernet, etc). I also made sure that it recognized my solo IDE DVD drive. All good.

Went to install Win 7 64 bit...and got stopped with the error "Windows need to install drivers...blah blah". What? Well...searched on the web and couple sites mentioned faulty download. Ok..cool. Let me just test the Win 7 32bit which I had download and had successfully installed on the computer that I was replacing. Same error...so I knew it wasn't the download...it was the computer. I figured I would just get Win7 64 loaded by way of USB...which went fantastically. Win7 booted fairly quickly...did its thing...rebooted...and took FOREVER on the reboot...thought a update or whatever screwed something up. Anyway, I proceded to install the nVidia drivers, Realtek...etc. On reboot...same thing...took forever and optical media wasn't being recognized in Win7. I unhooked the drive..and Win7 booted very quickly. I knew the culprit was the DVD drive...but why? Now, I'm fairly knowledgeable when it comes to computers so I started doing the usual...swapping IDE cables...setting jumpers...trying another drive (which caused the exact same thing). What is going on???

Well, to make a long story short...I enabled the ethernet in the BIOS and I be damned...Win7 booted quickly and the DVD drive worked like a charm. "This can not be", I told myself. So I went back into the BIOS...disabled the Ethernet once again...and sure enough...optical media wasn't recognized and Win7 took forever to boot. So...I do not know if this is Win7 or the motherboard...or the combination of both. I do not recall if I had the Ethernet disabled in the older computer nor do I want to fire it up to see.

But...if your IDE (I do not know about SATA optical drives) is not recognizing the optical media and Win7 takes forever to boot up...see if your Ethernet is disabled in the BIOS. I'm curious to see if I'm the only one with this particular issue.

shadowpope17, what's your mobo? Check for any BIOS updates if you don't have the latest. Possibly could be an OS<->BIOS interaction thing specific to Win 7. Might as well check that angle. I cured hanging coming out of sleep in Win 7 with a beta BIOS for my mobo.

I've experienced similar problems with my LG drive.To be honest LG drives are very picky when it comes to disks,software and OS.It doesn't take much to get them to flake out and blink non-stop or spin up and spin down without detecting any disc.I used to like them for the lightscribe and 3 drives later I'm hoping the current LG pata drive dies soon so I have a reason to do away with DVD-RW drives completely.I've had nothing but problems with LG.

My problem is fixed, thank you! How did I do it? Unfortunately the long way round. I re- installed Win 7. Luckily I have all my data on one drive and all programs on another and a third to run the OS. Overkill? Maybe! But when I finally decided to take the plunge this arrangement saved me lots of time and effort. Next, all windows updates is set to download and install only after I've checked them. Next step is to image my machine ASAP and create a Linux boot disk just in case. Just a few more programs to complete, then I'm done. Time will tell if my problems are over now. Cheers!
