I have a HP desktop computer that is connect via ethernet cable to a linksys wireless router. The router is connected to a Comcast cable modem.

The HP has Windows 7 (64 bit) loaded on it and I have problems getting connected up to web sites the first time I use the computer after start up or just log on. Tonight I tried getting to a site and was given an IE 8 cannot find xxxxxx message. Switched to try Google, same result. Tried several more times, same result.

Went to DOS prompt and pinged Google ... it hesitated initially, then returned the reply with no errors .... I was then able to go to google with my browser.

Just tried the ping again (1/2 hour after first problem) and it timed out. Tried the ping again then jumped to the browser window and brought up Google ... only after that did the ping start returning the results.

It almost appears that the first try at a site will fail about 90% of the time.

Via the linksys wireless, I have 3 laptops, an iphone and an Android that have never had a single issue connecting to the internet. The Laptops are running XP, Vista (32 bit) and Win 7 (64 bit).

After it connects to a site the session is without an issue. Trying a new site will usually cause a problem even from within the same browser.

Any thoughts on settings that are getting in the way?

Usually when this happens either the router or drivers aren't up to date so do not function properly with Windows 7. You should first try to update the routers firmware.

An update on this ... I updated the Linksys to the latest version of the firmware and bricked it.
Nothing tried after that would get back into it.

Bought a netgear router and haven't had a problem with anything since.
