Win 7 Folders taking a long time to access files.

I could not find the correct thread to post so please accept my apologies if this is an old resolved bug.

This has been winding me for a while now, but today it has totally done my head in.

! when I access my music folders from external USB and I click on a folder the grey bar at the top of the folder window takes ages to move across... then I get the red cross in the button. This is a major problem now, the cpu fan goes crazy and well its quite disturbing.

To get around this I would access my file from within the music editing software to avoid this problem, but as I'm a Mastering Engineer I need to access the files in their respective folders.

This was never a problem on any other machine I have had before. All drives are fine tested on other machines. They are good.

So today I tried it again, same thing. The grey bar at the top went crazy when I tried to access a wav folder to master with 2.5 gigs of data in.

The grey bar at the top slowly moves across the top then the red cross thing again in the button, I refresh and the same thing again. Meanwhile the fan goes on and the thing then seems to hang on finding files in folders. So I back out of the folder close it down. Then I went to My computer on the start menu... erm the grey bar again slowly moves to the right, No C drive shows up is empty and the fan kicks in and it sounds like it is going to take off.

Then I have to close the machine down as it cannot find anything in the folders.

This is very strange indeed. This only happen when I search for files in folders before hand, normally I can see my drives when I click my computer.

I have just rebooted the laptop now and it is good but when I open a folder it goes nuts.

Please could somebody help as this is the only thing I hate about win 7... and why is this happening?

Please try doing a integrity scan to see if there are any violations on your system.. RUN > CMD > SFC /SCANNOW
Post back with results..

What anti-virus do you use?

Thanks for the speedy response.

This is an off line music machine only, so no virus software is loaded on as all is scanned before hand. It has never been on the web... But music files are downloaded from a machine that has AVG on. I get sent files from my clients to master via the web, or there own server etc.

RUN > CMD > SFC /SCANNOW Results : Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation.

Please try and download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com and do a full scan & you should really think about getting anti-virus on that machine even you don't connect it to the web... Any flash drives or usb hdd's can carry infections that may just mean the end of your music collection. Give it a scan and post back..

Windows 7 Explorer file bug.

I have tested every single USB HD I own, scanned all for virus etc. Plus my music studio machines.

The systems are clean as a whistle. Even tested all my Flash drives just in case there is a nasty somewhere.

I have strong defenses against anything getting into the studio machines. But I wanted to just take your advise.. thanks. as there is a first time for everything.

I have tested external HD on two diff Win XP machines all files can be read and loaded etc.

This is a problem with .WAV files as far as I can narrow it down, that have been edited in Native Instruments Traktor Pro 2 DJ software. This is when it writes ID3 Tags.

Win 7 simply does not like these types of file it crashes the whole system.

This is a bug no doubt with Win 7 that happens with the additional search features of the windows explorer.

I can read every single file in super quickness but if any .WAV have had additional ID3 tags and metadata applied in Traktor it makes the whole system hang badly.

Sends the cpu in a frenzy and it sounds like a hoover with the fan kicking in, he, he.

I have backs ups of all the music files, I have two 1 T external HD that are cold storage. Ie back up of a back up, I'm a pro Mastering Engineer and cannot lose my clients data... also they are all are on D.V.D.

But when I access the small drives I use for Traktor to perform out , it goes ape... MP3 are fine.. but .WAV is a no go in Win 7 explorer.

I can load the tracks from the DJ software no problem... Strange isn't it.

It would be great to have the folders like xp on my Win 7 Home premium 64 as the blooming search feature is not plastered everywhere.

That sounds like this problem:
High CPU usage in the Explorer.exe process when you open a folder that contains corrupted .wav files in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

When a folder that contains corrupted .wav files is opened, Windows Explorer calls the Media Foundation (Mf.dll) function to extract metadata from the .wav files. However, the Mf.dll function enters an infinite loop when extracting the metadata.

Hi Cubicsilver,

yip its the loop of death... lol.... Just with .WAV files that have been tweaked (renamed in Traktor) so this is a not good for a pro dj / producer to have ..lol

So all is good if I don't open the edited .WAV files in Explorer ... unless I want to do the hoovering.
