Solved Win 7 Home Premium suddenly not genuine

Hope someone can offer me some advice please. I got asked to look at a relative's laptop which for a few months has been reporting that the copy of Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit is not genuine. The laptop originally had Vista Home Basic on it and he had it repaired and updated to Win 7 Home Premium by someone he knew. It was fine for about 2-3 years then apparently a few months ago started reporting Windows is not genuine.

You can also use cpu-z to show what exactly is the mother board is from or at least if it's been changed ?
Just run cupid and go to the mother board section and post a screen shot here,

The install is classed as counterfeit - because the machine shipped with Windows Vista, and cannot support an OEM_SLP Key for Windows 7.
The OEM_SLP Key is ONLY valid when the OS is pre-installed at the factory.
All of the 'free upgrades' from Vista to Windows 7 used OEM_NSLP (OEM System Builder) Keys. They were also for the equivalent edition of Windows 7 (in this case, Home Basic).
Since you got the upgrade from elsewhere (i.e. your 'friend') then it's counterfeit and you should reformat and reinstall the original Vista Home Basic.

Thank you for the reply Noel. Just a few questions if you don't mind so I can explain to my relative.

1. Why did the Windows 7 run fine for 2 to 3 years and then suddenly start saying it is not genuine?

2. What type of Windows 7 key does he need to buy to solve the problem and make Windows 7 genuine? If I understand correctly an OEM key will not work. Does he just need a genuine Microsoft key? If he got a genuine Vista to Win 7 upgrade I assume that would work. Would Vista have to be reinstalled first or would we be able to install over the current Win 7? He has got the Vista key on the laptop sticker.

I might be able to address that,
A Vista key is only good for Vista as far as I know there are no longer any upgrades to 7 available

You can buy a oem/ system builders copy of win-7 32 or 64 bit win-7 with your current home premium/.. at many online sites
I would suggest Newegg but these can also be had at Amazon/ TigerDirect those are about the only sites I would suggest but you are not showing a region

Thanks ThrashZone. So, are you saying that one of the cheaper OEM/ System Builder keys will fix this? He doesn't need to buy a full Microsoft version? I'm in the UK by the way. Would this work?

Seems okay but I would prefer a product sold by and shipped by the site buying from,
That is sold by a vender not Amazon directly which is often the case pretty much why I prefer Newegg.

You might search for local software distributes ?

For the record you have a oem slp so this would be better used as a clean install not just using the new activation key.

Recover your personal files and do a clean install.

OK. Great. Thanks for all the advice and help. I am still interested in why this suddenly went non genuine after years of being valid. Could it have been some Microsoft update that tightened up on the checking? Can't think of anything else.

Hi,
Yep some of the windows updates have been very good at detecting questionable installs
Don't loose the disk or the activation key
Best part about a clean install is you can use the disk as a startup repair... if you clean install using it

Think about upgrading to a ssd= solid state drive to clean install on.
