My windows 7 Home Premium wont boot and we may not be able to fix it.

Are there any upgrade packages that I can use and still be able to use the installed programs I currently have, in particular Adobe Lightroom as I have lost the installation disk for this software.

We will need a bit more information before we can advise you!

[1] When did this start happening?
[2] Did you install any new hardware or software prior to this happening?
[3] Did you have a system failure?
[4] Have you tried a System Restore?
[5] Can you boot into Safe Mode?
[6] Have you run sfc /scannow?
[7] Have you run chkdsk?
[8] Have you run a Startup Repair?

. . . etc.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for getting back to me. I have just found my installation disk for Lightroom so I have no problem reinstalling home premium or win 7 Ultimate.

I was trying to get help with the boot problem here but to answer some of your questions, the machine wont boot in safe mode, the fault appeared about a week/10 days ago, I have run all of what you have suggested but am getting stuck with FWPKCLNT.SYS missing or corrupt, I can see the file from dos so it must be corrupt. I did install a software upgrade and comodo anti virus but that was a few weeks ago. Restore points show a windows update on the 14? of this month.

It would be nice to get my current system back up and running but now I have located the missing software I could just move to win 7 ultimate.

Can you let me know what is best for you support guys and I will follow that course of action.

Thanks,
Pete

Unless you are to able to restore to a point before the problem - either via system restore or an image - probably easiest to reinstall.

There is nothing like a clean install.
For the updates, use Simplix.
My suggestion is to set Services - Windows Update - Manual and on WU page set it to Never check.
Then run UpdatePack7R2
Simplix is a single file (750MB) that contain all updates since Win 7 released up to date. It has all security and non security updates without the trash (telemetry and tracking). Very good.
Then run WU manually to find updates for Office etc and decide witch one to install.

To uninstall the telemetry, run cmd file to uninstall those KB files.
kb_spy.cmd.txt
Rename it as KB_Spy.cmd and run it.

If you want to do a huge upgrade on your computer, buy a small SSD (120G) for windows and programs and use your HDD for data.
A small SSD (120G) will cost less than US$25.
Last week a friend brought me a laptop that was taking almost 4 minutes to boot.
I've installed the SSD in the HDD place and installed the HDD on a caddy in the ODD place.

With the SSD it's now taking 30 sec to boot.

120G should be more than enough to install windows and programs if you move the users folder from the SSD (C:\Users) to the HDD (D:\Users).
Use Kari tutorial. I can guide you as I've done it many times

You are probably better going for the MX500 series, though they are a little more expensive.

You really should not be doing any kind of software upgrade when you have problems. The upgrade may solve whatever problem you have, or it may make it worse. In any event I don't know how you could do an OS upgrade on an unbootable system. That would call for fixing the problem or doing a clean install.

I am a firm believer in SSD drives. In the majority of cases it will make the biggest difference in performance at the lowest cost. Install the OS on the SSD and use a conventional drive for data. This will give you most of the advantages of an SSD without the cost of using an SSD for everything. In the larger sizes SSD's are still quite expensive. 120 and even 240 GB drives are really very inexpensive.

Thanks for all the posts :-) This was my last machine without a SSD as the boot. I have installed Win 7 Ultimate and backuped it up with Acronis (are their any better backup software packages on the market). I will take your advise on the windows update and will do regular backups on all my machines from now on - lesson learnt!
