Win 7 picks its own random update times / wakes up

I have Win7 64 bit on a laptop. It has the annoying habit of waking up (and literally waking me up) usually around 4:20 a.m. It could be waking from something else - in fact I disable the capability of the modem to awaken the computer from sleep.

Regardless, I had changed the Windows updates time to 6 pm every day and the PC was on all yesterday evening so it should have pulled down any updates then.

But instead, it decided to wake up by itself and check for updates at 6:35 am today.

Anyone have any ideas why it would do this?

could be a bunch of things. can you go into event viewer (type event vwr in search) go to the windows log>application tab. look for errors around the time when the machine came to life(errors have red in the left column) see if anything kicks off then, or dies then. If you find something (there is a lot of data) note the event ID and source code and let us know what they are.

If it's at 4:20 then it's telling you it wants to party.

Set WU to never automatically update and do it yourself once a month or so.

Why don't you set the updates so that you can install, rather than automatic. This is good for two reasons. It will solve your problem and you should make the final determination of what updates you want. In addition on update Tuesday, it is not good to install all at one time. Its bes to do a few at a time. Several members have had their computers freeze because of a heavy download.

Thanks for the input. Since it is my wife's PC, I would rather have everything automated than have to manage manual updates for her.

Fundamentally, it seems that something is wrong if it wakes up at 6:30 a.m. daily to do an update that I have scheduled for 6 pm weekly - so that is what I really would like to solve for.

If I can't solve for that I may have to go to manual updates, but would rather not.

There is a critical error related to "Kernel Power". I am trying to get the details but the PC is having trouble running at the moment, even in safe mode. It is event 41 (I think). I need to see if I can get the Event Viewer screen back up.

You can check this thread for possible ways to alleviate the hardware error.

Could be that something has just plain out failed and needs replacement, like the motherboard or capacitors on it.
