Win 7 Pro - OK in safe mode, instant BSoD in Normal Start

SSD as boot
2 mirrored drives and an additional drive

Machine has been up and running for a long time.
I assume/figure that since it runs in safe mode that there is some sort of driver error. Unlike all the people that say 'I haven't changed a thing' I have changed something.

I took a PATA HD (20 years old) and used a SAbrent IDE > USB connector to attempt to get the data off the HD. It did not work. Device mgr does not install the connector as a device but it did install the HD in device manager. It did not work, I assume, because W7 cannot read the file system of the ancient drive.
PC seemed to work fine...I shut it down and unhooked the connector. Left it off because of thunderstorms.
Fired it back up and problems. At first I could boot up and it would work for a while.
I tried repair etc...and restoring but nothing is working.

I have looked in dev mgr and the drive is no longer there. I don't see any errors in dev mgr (in safe mode)

The stop error was 0x0000007E - I don't have any more information at this point.
Guess I should go read the sticky at the top of this sub-forum now :huh: Probably should be checking out the error file and posting it...

From the crash dumps it appears to be some sort of memory corruption. But in that case it should affect the safe mode too. Let us first see if any driver or service is causing the issue.


Free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.

1. Click on the Start button
2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the system configuration window, with the "general" tab selected.

• Click the "startup" tab. Click "Disable all" > Apply > OK.
• Click on "services" tab. Check the "Hide all Microsoft Services"; Click "Disable all" > Apply > OK

Then try to boot again normally. Let us know if it works or not.

And test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Also, Is the computer hot? Report us the heat of the computer after a couple of hours of your normal usage. Upload a screenshot of the summery tab of Speccy. I disabled everything but MS services and rebooted. Seems to be OK for now. I'll let it idle and will report back.
The PC runs nice and cool.
I did memtest 86 this memory 6 months or so but I guess the memory could go bad over time. I've never had memory fail.

If it runs fine without the unwanted additional load, its fine.

If you take the RAM test, it will not harm anything but will give the assurance that RAM is not causing the issue.

So..the obvious answer is that a service is making this PC crash?
Should I turn 1 service on at a time and reboot to see what's making it crash?

Yes, you may do it. Do it for both the services and the startup items.

I enabled AMD fuel and it was fine ~ ~ ~ enabled AMD external events utility and looked over 10 minutes later and the monitor was gibberish and frozen.

Those services are bloats. You may avoid those during installing the display driver by choosing the advanced option.

Users generally dont need those AMD services. It is generally suggested to not install CCC and other bloats while installing the display driver.

Better you keep it unchecked. Then try the other services.

I have a feeling this has to do w/the HD installed via PATA / USB adapter. The HD is not connected but it is the only thing that has changed.
I suppose it could be the memory. It would be nice to be able to boot into safe mode!!!!

Edit: only MS services checked, no programs checked to startup....and I can't get into safemode. System repair does not work. System restore says it worked but it's been 'starting windows' for 5 minutes now.

You have 2X3 TB Seagate that you use as mirror? How it is set? Using RAID?

The latest situation (BSOD in safe mode too) gives a good idea that it is not a driver that is causing the BSOD. So it may be any hardware. If RAID is used for mirroring, that is also a suspect.

Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.

Stress test the CPU.
Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95

Test the HDDs (not the SSD).

The 2 3tbs are mirrored in disk mgmt. No hardware or software utility except for Windows.
Will you look at the new dump file please?
I will memtest it.

EDIT I just noticed in device manager that the mirrored drives say
Online - resynching
One of the right click options is 'reactivate'.

There is no crash dump after 01.08, unfortunately. Possibly those ones failed to be recorded.

If you dont use the mirror system (as a test at least), does it BSOD in the same way?

I don't understand what you mean. Do you want me to make the disks offline in disk mgmt and then test the system?

This problem has somehow solved itself. I updated the catalyst software (CCC) but the PC still BSoD'. I shut it down and booted it back up a couple times and eventually it decided it would boot....the windows raid system rebuilt itself and it's been running since.
I have not shut it down though....bizarre.

Too funny. I look over and the screen saver has frozen. Locked up again. BSoD on system repair. OY

I WILL ALSO SAY....that the last driver to ever load, and sometimes it will be before a hang, is ahcix64s.sys

But maybe that is normal......
