Hello.

I'm a student and the next quad will be starting soon. My computer (HP Pavilion Dv4) Has recently started acting weird after log in. It will show a completely black background, showing only the cursor and occasionally the task bar is displayed as well. After between 1(cold start) - 5(warm start) minutes of showing the screen, the computer will spontaneously show the desktop and immediately runs like it should.

Initially I suspected the start-up and registry. So I installed CCleaner and Uninstalled all unused or unrecognized programs, then I Cleaned up my start up menu from the "Windows" tab to the "Scheduled Tasks" tab. After that I ran the Cleaner and Fixed all issues in the registry. Still didn't fix it. Even if it was a crowded start up it shouldn't bog down my machine this much considering my 32 GB SSD Start up Cache.

In the past I did have a problem with BIOS. Apparently my NVIDIA GeForce 630M GPU wasn't being seen by my system. I did try to do a system recover since it was fairly new and the loss of files wasn't a huge deal at the time. It happened again after that so I resolved the problem by folding back on my BIOS.

Now I have a sneaking suspicion that maybe the cause of it, BUT now I have important programs, files, and data on my machine. On-top of all this, the extra 1 GB of Dedicated RAM my GPU provides to my computer allows all the processing power my i5 provides to go concentrate on my DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and OS. So the loss of the GPU would really cut down on print and render times. Resulting in some pretty upset customers and professors.

If I weren't worried that my computer is going to quit on me at any second, I wouldn't have stressed it. But school starts up again in the coming week, and I'm still without a solution besides Factory Image System Restore, which would be extremely counter-productive and I would have zero income between the restore and recovery of all my programs, synthesizers, effects, drivers, optimization, and clean up from all of the unnecessary games and apps that HP and Windows throw at you.

All of the AV software MUST be lightweight. I usually use MSE, CCleaner, and Windows Defender/Firewall.

P.S. If the restore is inevitable, is there a thread that might fix the "NVIDIA GPU not Detected" Warning I get with the updated BIOS?

Thanks
-Chris S.

No, it was a BIOS issue. It was having trouble with the NVIDIA drivers. I just downgraded my BIOS until they release an update. The new update seems to have fixed the issue. But just to be safe, I followed the steps to dubspots video tutorial for win 7 optimization for audio production.

Glad to hear it. Please mark the thread as solved. Thanks.
FYI - I just fixed a new build of mine with a newer BIOS.
Seems to be a useful technique.
