win 7 slow optical drive

Hi all,

When inserting a cd/dvd it takes an eternity to open. The "green snail bar" at the top of the screen is actually that.....a snail! Has anybody else got this problem? Is it common with win7? I have reinstalled my cd/dvd drive, updated the firmware and it is running under DMA mode. Could it be how the device is connected? I had this comp built recently and think it's connected with a SATA cable but not sure if it is in the correct sequence or slot (if necessary). Any ideas welcome, txs

Hello!

Does this happen with all discs, or just one or two of them? When that happens to me, it means that

a) the disc is scratched pretty good
b) the disc is almost full

Do either of these fit the bill?

Have you tried updating your CD/DVD drive drivers?

Yes, I've updated the firmware from LG, uninstalled and reinstalled the cd/dvd, tried the LG driver and the windows driver, uninstalled and reinstalled the IDE atapi and ensured it's set on DMA mode but still nfg. It's a brand new comp so I'd be surprised if the drive is faulty, seems to be something to do with win 7 or the setup.

Nice job filling out your specs! Not many new members do that!

Did you build that yourself, or buy it? If you bought it, it is probably still under warranty. Unless someone else here can recommend something better, I would contact customer support.

I've had issues with slow drives before, including one that caused a 2 hour install of 7. I had to replace the drive in both instances.

I have the same drive - how is the drive and Hard drive configured in BIOS - as Native or AHCI? Which controller is it attached too? Which SATA port?

Txs for your reply Frostmourne. Not the brightest globe in the chandelier when it comes to comps and not too sure about "native" and "AHCI".
I went into BIOS and saw the following.
SATA 1: WD 320gb
SATA 2: Not detected
SATA 3: WD 500gb
SATA 4: Not detected
SATA 5: HL-DT-ST-DVDRAM GH
SATA 6: Not detected

I opened the DVD page and it says:
Device: ATAPI CD-ROM
Vendor: HL-DT-ST-DVDRAM GH22NS50
LBA mode: Enabled
PIO mode: 4
ASYNC DMA: Multiword DMA-2
Ultra DMA: Ultra DMA-5

PIO mode: Auto
DMA mode: Auto

Does that help?

So its set to Native IDE - can you connect the dvd burner to a different SATA controller/port on the motherboard? This looks fine.

Txs to all, problem fixed. It was a faulty optical drive.
After changing the connection as suggested by Frostmourne, there was little difference so I got another drive under warranty and this one works fine. Just goes to show, new is not necessarily fail-safe.
