win 7 sp1 repair install fail

Ever since installing win 7 some years ago it has failed to install SP1. I have tried all the tricks on the internet to no avail. No system errors but SP1 fails to install with error 80004005.

I have a disk from downloaded from Microsoft which has windows 7 including the SP1 update and I thought a repair install was the way to go. However, with the new disk or the original install disk the upgrade installer just says cannot upgrade windows 7 to windows 7. With the SP1 disk I had set it to run with compatibility for Vista SP2.

Any help with this much appreciated. If all else fails a new install with the SP1 disk is likely my only option, but I would have to reinstall a lot of stuff, so am reluctant to go this route .

So I think this forum is the last chance saloon for this system.

Welcome to the forum. Is all your data backed up. If it is a clean install with the built in sp1 is the way to go. You could try booting the sp1 DVD and seeing if it will upgrade but in the long run a clean install give you a nice new system

that error code relates to a scripting error,
More than likely showing up and killing SP1 as part of windows Activation.
from your specs the key you have should either be
System Builder or Retail as shown on the CD's packaging.

Many thanks for your assistance. The disk is retail, I bought it when I made this system. It does say for distribution with a new PC. I think I bought it with the motherboard as it was not sold separately. Hope that the diagnostic works as I have a ton of work I would have to reinstall.

I did as requested although when I went to the microsoft site there was no validation button, just two pictures of windows 7 and office which led to a load of advertising stuff. Erased data.dat file comes back.

So I thought if its an issue with office I will just uninstall it and that should sort it out. Sadly that didn't work either. Latest scan results sans office :-

In my experience, an 80040005 error usually indicates a registry problem. Have you run the SURT/CheckSUR tool? If so, post the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - if not...

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file
