Hi all, i'm running out of ideas. I noticed that my driver for my XFX HD5850 was really out of date and that catalyst was no longer working. I tried to run an update for catalyst but it would get so far and come up with the error inf. file missing. I trolled the internet on what to do and ran suggested cleaners (CCCleaner) and driver sweeper. I then downloaded latest Catalyst but i still cannot get it to work. I have since read that somewhere/sometime the windows AMD inf. file has been deleted. Now the solution is to replace this file (according to Microsoft it's easy but they want $147US to do it for me), it's a file that ships with windows but I cannot find it or have any idea of how to replace it in the registry. I have a second computer that is running the same version of windows .. can I get it from one to the other ?? Any help would be great

When I uninstall Catalyst (and by that I mean EVERYTHING that's part of the AMD software package, audio and video drivers, CCC, install manager, Registry entries, folders on C, etc.) because an upgrade went badly and I need to "start over from scratch", I use Driver Fusion from Treexy. This is the company that used to provide Driver Sweeper previously.

Driver Fusion comes in free and non-free version, but the free version will do a perfect job of completely wiping away the AMD software from your system. And then you can re-boot safely and will be reverted [temporarily] to the vanilla MS generic VGA drivers to support your HD5850 video.

Then you can once again run the latest Catalyst Omega 14.12 installer package, and you should be in business.

Driver Fusion to cleanse driver software away completely.

Ok I started the whole process off by using the uninstall from device manager. I then used latest catalyst to reinstall. When it failed i resorted to using driver sweeper and ccleaner. All that worked fine .. but the missing inf file kept appearing. I contacted Microsoft who said that it was a file that shipped with windows that identifies the inf file on the driver that allows installation. It is not part of the driver it's part of windows that is missing. It's just a single inf file that is easily replace (according to Microsoft) but they want to charge for it .. if I can locate the file on my other computer (same version of windows) i can save having to do a fresh install of windows (don't want to do that). It has been suggested to try a windows repair ???

Actually, if you don't uninstall using Driver Sweeper (or Driver Fusion... which doesn't require CCleaner but purges the Registry by itself to guarantee 100% removal), the AMD-described uninstall procedure for a currently installed AMD Catalyst environment is:

Control Panel -> uninstall a program, and wait for the list to populate.

Then locate "AMD Catalyst Install Manager" and right-click, and select CHANGE. Push the NEXT button on the dialog window which appears.

You'll then be looking at a window from Catalyst Install Manager, where given your current installed condition the third radio button will be for "Express uninstall all AMD software". Check that radio button and push NEXT, and in theory everything should vaporize.

My own experience is that this is not necessarily successful or completely successful. Which is why I always use Driver Fusion if I do want/need to fully uninstall the current AMD software in order to freshly install a new Catalyst release.
