This is a Dell Inspiron 3541 laptop OS Win 7 32bit. Manufacture date is 2014 and there is a refurbished sticker on the bottom. By the way the internet connection is DSL from Frontier Communications. I have cooling fans under the laptop. When I 1st turn on the laptop cold everything is fine. After a while Windows starts to drag down speed wise and so does Firefox. I also tried Google Chrome and it starts to drag down also after a while. I ran malware cleaner and spybot. Nothing along those lines were found. Zone Alarm is doing a good job at catching virus and so on. But when I go to click on a button in a web page, lets say to download something, ether I get a redirect, or a new tab openings, to something that has nothing to do with what I am after. Sometimes to get rid of the redirect I have to shut down the browser and in an extreme case I have to drop the wifi connection before the browser will start responding again. So far it is just a big annoyance. I have tried what I know to fix this short of whipping the partition, re-format the HD and reinstalling everything. :banghead:

The gateway laptop model MD2614U died because a voltage regulator on the motherboard went poof. The Gateway laptop has been scraped.
You didn't say what cpu you're using, and how much ram?

For instance, an AMD cpu will throttle down when it gets hot.
Have you checked the main cooling fan, for dirt, dust, bugs, etc. ;)

I do service on laptops and I'm never surprised at how much dirt I can blow out of the cpu cooler, with compressed air. I was even given one beautiful HP laptop, because it would boot up and then crash a few seconds later. It has an Intel cpu and they don't like HOT. The cpu fan was frozen solid.

So that's the first thing I check on every laptop I have to work on.

You mentioned two programs that look for malware, but two is not always enough. I'd install Super Anti-Spyware FREE, and do a full scan. There is a lot more, that I do on every laptop, but it's hard to discuss that here.

So, physically examine the cpu cooler, to make sure it's clean and running up to speed.

Cheers Mate!

TechnoMage, The cpu is an AMD single core cpu. Speed ruffly 1796 mhz. Total memory is 2506MB. I will open the laptop later tonight and blow it out with caned air I attached a screen capture of "speedfan" showing the current readings. On backing up files, you sure ain't whistling dixie, I have a 500gb santa laptop hard drive in a external USB case. I use that hard drive to store install programs, instruction doc's, pictures and so on. I only had about 1/3rd of everything on that HD backed up to data DVD's when I made a big time goof. I was working on a SD card in the laptop's reader slot. I didn't pay good enough attention to the drive letter that I was working on in the admin panel > computer manament and I reformated the 500gb hd :banghead:

PS 30c = 86° and 58c = 136° I have a pilots hand calculator that can convert both ways Celsius to fahrenheit and Fahreheit to Celsius.

2nd PS I will look for and download a Windows prog that displays the actual fan speed and voltage. Then post that info here also.

It seems that you have a quad core CPU.
Strange is that Open hardware monitor doesn't show the temperatures.

Hi Reble

DONT like the sound of this REEKS of malware

Zone Alarm is doing a good job at catching virus and so on. But when I go to click on a button in a web page, lets say to download something, ether I get a redirect, or a new tab openings, to something that has nothing to do with what I am after. Sometimes to get rid of the redirect I have to shut down the browser and in an extreme case I have to drop the wifi connection before the browser will start responding again. So far it is just a big annoyance. I have tried what I know to fix this short of whipping (1) the partition

I suggest you run a scan with malwarebytes.
and just to be on the safe side
Eset online-- dissable Zone alarm .

EDIT
Steve been looking back at you other posts
I wouldn't be surprised if your getting re-infected by using your USB/external devices there possibly still infected scan them as well. note make sure you reset Auto play to NO action beforehand

I did run malwarebytes and spybot. They both reported that both hard drives are clean. As for the USB/external hard drive goes. It accidentally got re-formated and I lost everything on it. I am still rebuilding the files on it.
