for some reason Windows Update is struggling to install Office 2010 updates

At first it was one update, now it 4

I just get this error

Code:
i.imgur.com/zM86EyN.jpg

I tried downloading manually but it gives another vague error.

Every time I try and install it creates a restore point but fails.

I am loathe to tell it to ignore them as they seem pretty important

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

OMG

So we have an OS that is full of security hold and needs constant updating, but we then need a special 526mb tool of which there are 9 versions.

"It may appear to freeze or hang, but this is perfectly normal. If it still hasn't finished after a few hours"

Then it will bugger up all my settings

"Be aware that if you have modified your system files as in theming explorer/system files, running sfc /scannow will revert the system files such as explorer.exe back to it's default state. Make the appropriate backups of your system files that you have modified for theming if you wish to save them before running sfc /scannow."

Looks like half a days work to carry this out.

Thanks Microsoft

Genuine Thanks to NoelDP

You've only included the CBS.log - not the Persist, and CheckSUR files that are also requested.
Please do so.

I am not clear on what I am missing,

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

I downloaded the 526mb, yes I kid you not a 526mb file, it offered the enclosed hotfix and then ran but did not seem to offer any file or upload. The page does not give any idea of what to upload.

Assuming that is the CheckSUR you are referring to I am not clear what the "Persist" thing is?

Thanks for a very unhelpful response, so here are the instructions, as I said I do not see anything referring to Persist, and CheckSUR files that are also requested. So why not just point that out where I can find what you ask askign for:

Windows Update Posting Instructions
Windows Update Posting Instructions

Information
This is a set of posting instructions to use so that you can get better help here at SevenForums.com when you have a Windows Update issue.

warnsmall.png
Warning
Never, under any circumstances, follow the instructions posted to another user who appears to be having the same problem as you (unless specifically instructed to). Windows Update problems are very computer specific and following instructions made to another user will probably do more harm than good.

1. System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)
  1. Under Download the System Update Readiness Tool, download the appropriate version of the SURT for your version Windows, and save the file to your Desktop.
NOTE: It is likely that we will need to run this file multiple times, so make sure you keep it. DONE

System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008
  2. Double-click on the file to install it. DONE
  3. Leave it to run uninterrupted. It may appear to freeze or hang, but this is perfectly normal. If it still hasn't finished after a few hours, then notify us in your post.DONE
DONE but nothing happened, see above screen shots

2. SFC Scan
  1. For how to run, see: sfc /scannow

DONE file attached to post above

3. Windows Update Error Codes

In your post, you need to specify what error codes/messages you are receiving when an update fails. The screenshot below shows where error codes are displayed:

DONE 80070663

4. Log Collection

The steps that we have done have limited automated fixing capabilities, however they are excellent diagnostic tools and generate very informative logs.
  1. Navigate to the following folder: DONE
    C:\Windows\Logs
  2. Right-click and on the CBS folder and select Copy.
    DONE
  3. Minimise all open windows and right-click on your Desktop, then select Paste. DONE
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder on your Desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder. DONE
  5. A file, CBS.zip should appear on your Desktop. DONE
5. Start a New Thread

Please do not post in another thread saying that you require assistance, it makes things very confusing. If you have a problem that you would like help with, please start a new thread of your own!

Your post should include the error codes from step #3 and the CBS.zip file created in step #4. Here's how to attach it to your post:

Sorry Noel

I got an error copying the folder because I was not admin and then copies the file only.

Unfortunately the ZIP file was too big for this forum

So reading back on what you are asking for I am hoping that you do not need the CAB files (let me know if you so and I will upload them one by one seperately.

I have attached the CBS log file and the other files excluding CAB file in the CBS SUR Persist zip file.

Hopefully this will give you what you need.

Thanks!

The CBS.log is not actually complaining about your Office Updates at all - what it IS complaining about (a lot!) is an inability to install Service Pack 1 for Windows 7.
Code:
2014-07-11 17:39:51, Info CBS Appl: Partial install Status testing, package: Package_for_KB976933~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.7601.17514, partially installed (true/false), 0

The CheckSUR scan was clear.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

Code:
dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514

Then do another Check for Updates, and ONLY install Service Pack 1 if it's offered.

The error massage means that DISM has decided that the update is not uninstallable - I suspect that means that your only option is going to be a repair install.

It seems a bit drastic as the problem is supposed to be with Office 2010 not Win7

Other updates install, just none of the Office ones.

A couple of things spring to mind

1. What if I uninstalled Service pack 1 via Windows Update
2. What if I uninstalled Office 2010 and re-installed
3. Searches for the original code suggest it used to refer to a license issue with Office but the solutions revolved around an office 2007 file that does not exist for office 2010.

My Office 2010 install is on a different partition so if there is any sloppy refererences in the updates that may affect it.

The instructions I posted should have uninstalled Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - since they didn't work, I doubt very much that the WU listing uninstall will work either.
With SP1 in an unknown state, you're not getting the updates that you should be getting for Windows - and this may be affecting the Office detections as well.

I really do think your best option is a repair of Windows, and then at least you will know that you have a good base to work from.
